Food reform in America is vital and necessary; My entry into this world came through my early need to make sense of my health condition. I am 65 as I write now. As a teen, I had many crippling emotional experiences, that included the death of my mother before my Bar Mitzvah at 13. A Bar Mitzvah is the time when in the Jewish Tradition they say a boy begins to take on manhood. It was very difficult to go through this without my mother. She was at the center of a home cooked meal in our house and for our community at large that lived in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles.
My mother's pastry was the delight of our neighborhood. I remember Beverly who worked at the nearby Raskin's Bakery on First Street. She came over with the gift of a Coconut Creme Pie in hand and sat there swooning over my mother's baked goods.
MY FIRST CRIMES
My first crimes that caused me guilt were food related. I remember going into my mother's purse without permission to take a penny, a nickle or a dime to have money to buy brightly wrapped candy at the corner store. For ten cents at most you could get a box of Good and Plenty, and these, as the saying went, were Plenty Good for me. One candy I liked was The 3 Musketeers. An occasional Snickers with carmel and chocolate coating also satisfied. I never had too many conversations with fresh vegetables.
THE WORLD OF NATURE
My world began to fall apart at an early age, but it was also nature that saved me. We had a big back yard that inspired my own imagination. it was here I became a mad scientist, mixing the remains of thrown out talcum powder with a bottle of something inflammable. I created a frightening concoction in my backyard Frankenstein lab near the trash can. Somehow, the concoction spilled over a bag of colored Indian corn.
Fearing fire, I buried the paper bag drenched with chemistry in a hole at the base of a drippy faucet. I was amazed to find little seeds began to grow. This backyard garden experience amazed me. I was enchanted by Nature and her ability to make seeds grow. Nature won out as the years went by. I turned away from being a chemist. How I ever found a bag of Native American corn in my trash pile remains to this day a mystery.
CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY
Fast forward 50 or more years. We live in a world where there are bigger food Related crimes than taking a nickel or dime from your mother's purse to buy candy.
Kids no longer have home cooked meals made from scratch. There are fewer and fewer little neighborhood places where Bakers with the love of their craft get up before dawn to make fresh bread made from wholesome wheat and other grains.
THE CREATION OF WHEAT ITSELF HAD BECOME A CRIME
The creation of wheat itself has become a crime these past 50 years since I first tasted my first Raskin's Bakery Cookie, or Beverly came into our dining room to sit with my mother as she made her home make goodies.
This is where Bob Quinn and his family and their upholding KAMUT® Brand Ancient wheat enter my story.
AS THE LEGEND GOES...

This photo was taken at the 2nd Annual Natural Heirloom Expo In San Rosa, CA. Making "Grow A Healthier Pizza" boxes is one of our School Activities. This box was made from a Slice Truck Pizza Box, of the first places to feature KAMUT® Pizza Crust. At our home in San Diego, the Enchanted Garden Intentional Community, Nadine Dominguez is developing a 100% Pizza flour crust made from freshly ground KAMUT® Brand Khorasan Wheat. One of our Seed Dreams is to offer this at the local San Diego Farmers' Market.
As the legend goes, Bob, a Montana farmer, had his fate turned in the direction of this ancient grain of wheat when his dad, Mack, brought some home from a country fair. Bob began to grow out the ancient grain that he named KAMUT®, a name for wheat in the ancient Egyptian times. In an age when most wheat is manipulated for commercial gain beyond what may be intended for human consumption, The ®--meaning Registered Trademark--is especially important to me.
It means Bob and his family are upholding the right and integrity of an ancient grain of wheat to be what nature had in mind-something wholesome and good for Kids, good for healthier meals, and our future.
This book "Grow A Healthier Pizza" tells my relationship to an ancient grain of wheat and the promise of Food Reform in America as many more of us regain confidence that we can grow our own food. This book is about the quest to help our Kids have hands on-experiences with growing seeds and grain. It describes different activities to regain our relationship with what is inside our Pizza box, and what needs to be in there. kids again need to plant grains and seeds and know as much about uploading nutrients into plants as they know about uploading information into computers.
Food Reform will come as Kids turn grain into flour, and see flour turn into something the body welcomes--good food Economic health and wealth for America will return as we Grow A Healthier Pizza. Though the simple act of growing a simple grain of original Ancient Wheat, and Heirloom seeds as they have existed for generations, we can get our beat back with nature.
The Day of Food Reform is now here, and the time again for a home cooked meal will return to our dinner tables. How Fast Can A Dream Grow?

My Mother Ann Goldman's Recipe Book, 1965. My mother died of cancer in 1965. I was 12. Ingredients for Ribbon Cookie's include: I cup butter or shortening, Candied cherries, and broken pecan nuts; poppy seeds, flour, salt, sugar,eggs, and baking powder. I wonder how those Ribbon Cookies will taste today with organic ingredients and KAMUT® Brand Khorasan Ancient wheat?
