New Year’s Message 2013: Peace in the Middle East

A family member and I often find ourselves at odds over world politics. We disagree vehemently over Middle Eastern politics, particularly regarding the ongoing conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians. I am usually “left of center” politically while Family Member (“FM” for short) is “right of center”.  Our disagreements have become very irritating for me, and I’m sure for Family Member.

In my home, I pray often for “peace in the Middle East in my lifetime.” I often find myself thinking, after one of my family debates, “How can there be peace in the Middle East if I can’t even have peace in my own home?” So, on 12-30-2012 I sat down with Spirit and asked how I should deal with this situation with Family Member. The answer was surprising, and is one that goes way beyond my own family’s political disagreements.

Q: How should I approach Family Member when we are discussing the Middle East?

A:  Listen with patience, calmness, compassion.  Do not say “irrational”, “right-wing”, “ridiculous” or any other judgmental terms.  Family Member has a right to express FM’s opinions even if they are not at all in agreement with yours. Many people share such similar beliefs as FM’s.

And it is true—how can there be peace in the Middle East if there is no peace in your own home?

If you disrespect FM’s views, call FM judgmental names---imagine this amplified times 10,000 in terms of hostility between Israelis and Palestinians—how then can there be any hope for peace and reconciliation with such hatred, disregard, disrespect?

The place to start with peace is in your own home! This is not just a figure of speech—it is a TRUTH.

Humanity’s thoughts and feelings are projected out in the world where they are joined with the thoughts and feelings of all human beings on the planet. This of course affects Gaia deeply and She is reactive to it—She is turbulent with human feelings of hatred, anger, rage, violence; She is calm with human feelings of love, compassion, patience, understanding.

To end war humans must project these feelings (love, compassion, patience, understanding)—not just thought patterns.  If there is no peace in one’s heart there will not be peace in the world. A person may think they are “pro peace” yet harbor feelings of anger and resentment; what gets projected out into the world are both thoughts and feelings. (In the latter case there) is already a conflict between the thoughts of a person and what that person holds in their heart and so the energy of CONFLICT is projected out into the world.

For peace to ensue in the world, in one’s country, one’s neighborhood, one’s home, one’s person, there needs to be congruence between one’s thoughts, one’s feelings, and one’s actions. To speak of peace while harboring anger in one’s heart is to defeat one’s own intentions.

Individual actions, thoughts, and feelings at first seem to not be of much consequence on a planet comprised of 7 billion souls, yet each adds their energy to the “soup” of the consciousness of humanity.

To have peace in the Middle East—or anywhere else in the world, one must start with peace in their own heart, peace in their own home, for how can humanity expect nations to be at peace if individuals can not find it for themselves?

And so we come again to you and Family Member. Whenever you start to feel annoyed or aggravated with FM or FM’s expressions, stop and breathe deeply. Think “Peace in the Middle East starts with me.”  Listen to FM. Ask questions allowing FM to express views, opinions, feelings. Do not ridicule or belittle FM. Remember that FM’s views are held by many. Come to understand FM’s views and feelings even if you do not agree with them. Over time you will be able to hear FM out without feelings of disdain or judgment. Allowing FM to express freely, FM will feel your love for FM even as FM knows you are not judging.

Remember that many others share the same thought-feelings—of fear, resentment, desire for revenge, hatred, desire for what they perceive as “justice” for a people wronged; and so, here in your own little home you find the issues of the Middle East—miles away geographically but yet a heartbeat away energetically—coming into your life.

How are you going to meet these issues—with continued disdain, judgment, hostility…or with love, compassion, nonjudgment, patience, and understanding?

As you choose to think, act, and feel, so does the world. Your life as an individual is but a microcosm of the whole.

And so we leave you for now---Love from us ALWAYS, No Matter What! Namaste, Amen, and SO IT IS!
