KAMUT ® KHORASAN ANCIENT WHEAT 2011- 2012 ACTIVITIES

SUMMARY

Growing KAMUT ® Khorasan Ancient wheat in 2012 was a way to help youth and adults reestablish their connection with nature through growing this Sacred Seed. Through having the experience of grinding wheat in different venues, I, and then, later with my partner Nadine, created an engaging activity. Many enjoyed the experience of grinding the wheat and seeing it turn into dough.
In 2012, at home, we began to explore making the ancient wheat into recipes such as pizza crust. An added dimension came in as well--growing a Healthier and Challah--The Jewish Ritual Bread-- as well as a Passover Matzah--made of KAMUT ® Brand Khorasan Ancient Wheat. Nadine Dominguez, my partner and housemate, was invaluable throughout the year. Nadine has a natural gift in the kitchen. Grow A Healthier Pizza began because a number of seeds came into my life--including the KSMUT ®; but then, with the addition of Nadine's natural gift in the kitchen, the idea expanded into the quest to create the ultimate Healthier Pizza made out of Freshly ground whole grains of KAMUT®. There were many photo opportunities, including videos. Many of my ideas take form through graphics inspired by deeply seated dreams that later take form. By late fall the idea of Nadine's Healthier Pizzeria jelled as a Poster out of activities taking place in our Enchanted Garden Kitchen. Throughout hte year, this Seed Dream of Grow A Healthier Pizza, sprung to life with delicious fresh smells of 100% KAMUT ® Khorasan wheat, that had been ground by children and adults, filling our i kitchen with delightful sights of pizza being made. Nadine was excellent working with the children at numbers of events as well.

THE YES ON 37 CAMPAIGN

Throughout 2012, I introduced KAMUT ® Khorasan wheat to many people, and began to use it in my Plant Your Dream ritual. For many months of 2012, I was deeply involved in the Yes on Prop 37 Campaign. I saw early on that victory November 6, the day of the California Election-- would come out of growing a Grassroots movement from bottom to top and top to bottom. All of us--from Organic Industry stakeholders to Grassroots Activists needed to see that we were growing in the same pot. Many of the activities had never entered the political arena. There were many lessons to be learned, and this book will detail out some of the lessons that I learned as well as tell about the role I saw myself playing toward Prop 37.

THE MAGICAL NUMBER 7.5 MILLION +2

I saw that the magical number 7.5 Million + 2, a simple majority of all who registered to vote in 2008, would be needed to win Prop 37, the Right to Know Label Genetically Engineered Food Act. . I did my best planting this dream throughout the year of 2012. KAMUT ® was literally being planted in pots at various events. More than 6 million voted yes on Prop 37. Grow a Healthier Pizza was the Rally Cry I added to the Campaign. I knew throughout the year that I was on to a deep truth. We were asking a lot of people to vote YES who for the most part unaware of the importance of healthy food. We were asking them to vote yes on their Right to Know, but when push came to shove, the fear that their grocery bills might go up, whether this was true or false, was more important to them than voting YES on Prop 37.

THE CARAVAN, SEPTEMBER 1-10, TO THE NATIONAL HEIRLOOM EXPO

In the book, I present my case, that for America the Beautiful to return, we need a nation of gardeners. Grow A Healthier Pizza took form through my intention to caravan with plants September 1-10, to the 2nd Annual National Heirloom Expo, September 11-12, 13. The accomplishment of this was a big win for many reasons.
The Caravan idea was tied in with a profound sense that I needed to be a part of the National Heirloom Expo in September. This dovetailed with a Petition online.to ask 7.5 Million + 2 people to come into agreement-- that we would Grow A Healthier Pizza as a way of putting Special Interests in their place. In the end, many leaders of the Prop 37 Campaign signed the Petition but I did not feel effective in conveying the message that we needed not only the Right to Know, but had to awaken the Know how to grow some of our own food if we were to come out the other side of our Food Emergency. Labeling GMO's was the focus, but this was only a part of the job that I saw needing to be done. 2013 was all about going back to the drawing board--writing and organizing in Winter, preparing the book online and beautiful graphics and a book online that could help create the Grassroots movement that would not only label GMOs, but through Food Reform, end our current Food Emergency.

WILL KAMUT ® Brand Khorasan Ancient Wheat grow in a pot?

In my first year of adopting this plant as a friend, I successfully took it from seed to seed and came up with a handful of kernels to harvest. INTRO

My History with this grain called KAMUT ® Brand Khorasan Ancient wheat may go back 3000 years. One of my favorite stories is "The Legend of Zoraster," by Edmond Bordeuax Szekely, the Co-Founder of Rancho La Puerta, the Number One Destination Spa in the world located in Tecate, Mexico.

My Journey with Bob Quinn became at the Organic Summit in Baltimore, MD at the Natural Product Expo East in September 2011.

He told me about this remarkable grain that legend said was more than 3000 years old and as it was told, was called the Prophet's Grain. The profit was Noah, and it was the local people of that the Middle East who told him about Khorasan Wheat, this grain that he protects as an organic and heirloom seed that he has named KAMUT ®.

THE LEGEND OF ZORASTER IS AN ARCHETYPAL STORY FOR ME

The "Legend of Zoraster" is an archetypal story for me. It tells about a King, troubled by nightmares, who went to see a local gardener in his neighborhood, Zoraster, seeking a Remedy.
The Remedy the famous gardener gave the King was a simple grain of ancient Wheat.
Over the years, I have told and retold and adapted this story.
The King stored the kernel of wheat in a Golden Box, imagining that something might happen there, but not until he planted the seed in the soil did its enchantment open for him

In 2012, That Silver Box was on a journey that went from The Natural Product Expo West in March 0f 2012 to many other places.

WE ARE ALL GROWING IN THE SAME POT

The marriage of KAMUT ® tp my work added another dimension: The growing of Grass in a pot.
I have been teaching that each person is entitled by their birthright to be as the Gardener. It only takes One Pot+ One Seed or Plant to be A Gardener. I adopt one or more favorite plants and seeds, and yet the arrival of Bob Quinn in my life as an ally was like coming home full cirlce. It brought me back to the original seed that began and inspired my work, Plant Your Dream!

HERE ARE SOME OF THE OTHER ACTIVITIES AND TRAVELS FROM 2012

SEPTEMBER 2011 ORGANIC SUMMIT, BALTIMORE, MD. I have been involved as a photographer for the Organic Trade Association (OTA) for about a decade. My photos for more than five years were used as the donor gift for those who contributed to the Annual Funding Campaigns. I was the photographer for the OTA and Organic Center for a number of years. Bob Quinn was a friendly face during those years. In the Fall of September 2011, I received support from Horizon Organics and Kelly Shea, that made it possible for my first East Coast Tour of more than eleven days. On September 20, The USDA had an Organic Listening Session and I spoke. I volunteered to be the Enchanted Gardener for the People's "Organic" Garden Initiative. It was there I met Mark Lipton, an organic farmer, who worked for the USDA Organic Sector, and organized the event. The following day, was the Organic Summit in Baltimore, MD. It was there I connected with Bob Quinn. I explained to him some of my work at a deeper level. He gave me a big Yes. My journey with KAMUT ® was sealed. Bob became a Plant Your Dream Sponsor. The Organic Summit was held in conjunction with the Natural Product Expo East, and the OTA special events. At the OTA Gala, the eve of the Organic Summit, Mark Lipton was being giving a leadership Award. He singled me out. I stood up and took the ovation. This was filmed by Lurrae Lupone, my East Coast Organizer. I was deeply moved by the People's Organic Garden Project and my visit to the USDA. The Seeds that gave birth to the commitment to ask 7.5 Million + 2 to become gardeners, to grow a Healthier Pizza, and to Vote Yes on Prop 37, came out of that trip. Those seeds in 2012, became planted with KAMUT ® Brand Knorasan Ancient Wheat, and Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.

MARCH 2012

At the Natural Product Expo West March, 2011, I introduced KAMUT ® Khorasan wheat as my primary seed for the year. Bob Quinn, the founder of KAMUT ® INTERNATIONAL, and many others planted Dreams with KAMUT ® that I had in a pot I carried from venue to venue. Here is a photo of Bob planting seeds of KAMUT ® in a Pot. Others who planted dreams were Gary Hirshberg, his wife Meg Hirshberg, and Megan Westgate, founder of the Non-GMO Project.

INVITATION TO TEACH AT THE 2nd FESTIVAL OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE OF THE AMERICAS

In April, I had a pot of KAMUT ® with me at the EarthFair in Balboa Park, San Diego. Brian Hornbeck and his wife planted dreams. I was invited to participate and teach at the 2nd Festival of Traditional Medicine for the Amercas at Professor's Park in Tecate.

THE CULTIVATING FOOD JUSTICE CONFERENCE

A Highlight of the year was introducing KAMUT ® Khorasan Ancient Wheat to the Cultivating Food Justice Event that we did on Cinco De Mayo, May 5, 2012.

KAMUT ® Khorasan was used in a recipe for lunch. KAMUT® International was thanked for their contribution of product to the Cultivating food Justice Event.

A FEW WEEKS LATER I RETURNED TO TECATE FOR WORLD ENVIROMENT DAY

Asking, Ramon Real, Secretary of Agriculture Tecate, to pull his Sacred Dreams out of the Box. KAMUT® Khorasan Ancient Wheat, because of its heirloom nature, is a Sacred Seed to me, worthy of being an instrument of Ceremonial uses.

The secretary of Agriculture for Tecate was very interested in the ancient wheat. I want to followup, per directives from KAMUT®iNTERNATIONAL. I wonder if Mexico would be a good place to propagate KAMUT® and allow it to be a source of income there for the people. KAMUT ® is gaining in popularity. I sense it has the biodiverse inherent gene pool within it to acclimate to other climates. This would give more latitude to prevent against shortages if any one area of the country had low yields.
Other projects were planted through the year to acclimatize KAMUT ® Khorasan wheat to other areas. In the fall, I introduced Elisa Frey, who has been growing organic grains at the Frey Vineyard to Bob Quinn. This meeting took place at the National Heirloom Expo. The Frey family was already exploring growing grains between their biodynamic crop of grapes.

JULY PLANTING SEEDS FOR THE WELL BEING OF FUKUSHIMA

One of the most Sacred Experiences I had for 2012 was planting seeds of KAMUT ® Khorasan Ancient wheat with Chiko Shiina, a farmer and peace advocate from Fukushima. These ancient seeds were appreciated very much.

Leslie, that's me, reading from " The Legend of Zoroaster" on my 65th Birthday. This is the story that inspired my Plant Your Dream Work. It is about a King who is given the gift of a Sacred Seed, but keeps it in a box rather than planting in in the soil. When, the King plants his dream, Persia enters a great time as a nation living in harmony with nature.

GRINDING WHEAT AT THE POSADA AT RANCHO LA PUERTA

Robert Arjona, General Manager for Rancho La Puerta, helped grind some ancient wheat of KAMUT ® Khorasan wheat as part of our kid activity offered at the Rancho La Puerta Posada December 9, 2012. As a Prize for helping to grind the wheat, the Kids and adults got to choose a gift of Heirloom Seeds to take home and plant. The day had lots of kid activities. Nadine and I were gratified to offer this nature activity. In the Olden Days of Rancho La Puerta, Edmond Bordeaux Szekely taught that it was important to grind wheat fresh for bread. I felt his spirit was smiling on us as we brought back the very enjoyable experience of grinding fresh wheat the would be made into a bread.

I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH A BIGGER PERSONAL HARVEST I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A GROWING RELATIONSHIP WITH KAMUT ® INTERNATIONAL My relationship with the grain started out of an excitement and connection with Bob Quinn, the founder and president of KAMUT ® International. How might this relationship grow in 2013? WILL THIS GRAIN ACCLIMATE TO OTHER GROWING CLIMATES? I have much to learn about this grain. I wonder what growing climates it might also like? Is it suited to the Northwest, to Mexico? I set out to explore the idea that it might acclimate to other growing areas.
