Communication - Conscious, Genuine and Complete by #29621 .....

A complete communication requires "true listening" and that in turn may require some form of duplicating what was said. Without this duplication process the intended communication can often be incompletely conveyed. Any important communication deserves to be duplicated.

"... speaking in generalities is destructive to genuine communication."[1]

Would like to see how this quote of Scott Peck is true? Authentic communication will raise the sense, the awareness of reality between those who are participating in that communication. Inversely - a lack of reality will hinder genuine communication. If you want to make your reality known to another you need to effectively communicate that to the other/s. If you want genuine communication with others you need to include the reality of your subject matter. Speaking in generalities will not effectively communicate your reality and therefore it becomes destructive of genuine communication.

Just discovered the following in my last inspirational search:

"Listening in dialogue is listening more to meaning than to words . . . In true listening, we reach behind the words, see through them, to find the (individual) who is being revealed. Listening is a search to find the treasure of the true (individual) as revealed verbally and non-verbally. ...

I will have to rephrase what you have said, and check it out with you to make sure that what left your mind and heart arrived in my mind and heart intact and without distortion."

- John Powell, theologian"[2]

After a visit with my father I emailed him the above and said:

"I found myself wanting to 'rephrase' a few things that you had said tonight but not 'able' to graciously seize an opportunity to do that."

(12/1/15 I can't tell you just how hilarious that is for me now!)

Understanding is essential in order to have a complete communication cycle. "Duplication" can possibly serve that purpose.

Consider "Understanding" in light of the Etymological Dictionary.:

understand (v.) Look up understand at Dictionary.com

O.E. understandan "comprehend, grasp the idea of," probably lit. "stand in the midst of," from under + standan "to stand" (see stand). If this is the meaning, the under is not the usual word meaning "beneath," but from O.E. under, from PIE *nter- "between, among" (cf. Skt. antar "among, between," L. inter "between, among," Gk. entera "intestines;" see inter-).

That is the suggestion in Barnhart, but other sources regard the "among, between, before, in the presence of" sense of Old English prefix and preposition under as other meanings of the same word. "Among" seems to be the sense in many Old English compounds that resemble understand, e.g. underniman "to receive," undersecan "to investigate," underginnan "to begin." It also seems to be the sense still in expressions such as under such circumstances.

Perhaps the ultimate sense is "be close to," cf. Gk. epistamai "I know how, I know," lit. "I stand upon." Similar formations are found in O.Fris. (understonda), M.Dan. (understande), while other Germanic languages use compounds meaning "stand before" (cf. Ger. verstehen, represented in Old English by forstanden). For this concept, most Indo-European languages use figurative extensions of compounds that lit. mean "put together," or "separate," or "take, grasp" (see comprehend). O.E. oferstandan, M.E. overstonden, lit. "over-stand" seem to have been used only in literal senses.[3]

More on "Listening":

"Listening is something that can only be done with your whole being" Richard Rudd, Gene Keys[4]

This comes from the 13th Gene Key - "Listening Through Love"

"The 13th Gene Key in particular is one of the most important of all 64 Gene Keys, since it involves the way in which you process your past."
