Hello,

Starting today the Senate is voting on Farm Bill amendments.

Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) has introduced an amendment (http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2012/06/sen_jeff_merkley_introduces_am.html) to the Senate version of the Farm Bill to address crop insurance inequities for organic farmers. Currently, for most crops, USDA does not pay organic farmers at the organic price after a loss, and it charges an unjustified premium surcharge to organic farmers to enroll in the program.

Senator Patrick Toomey (R- Pennsylvania) has introduced an amendment to the Senate Farm Bill that would strike the National Organic Certification Cost Share Program. If approved, it will deny access to organic certification to thousands of organic farmers. Organic Certification Cost Share is important for all organic farmers, and helps meet strong consumer demand for organic with U.S. organic products.
