California Lt. Gov. and former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced his endorsement of Democrat Bob Filner for San Diego mayor at a fundraiser on May 23. Newsom is the latest in a long list of prominent Democrats to speak publicly in support of the Congressmember’s bid for local office, including Assemblymember Toni Atkins and Sen. Christine Kehoe.
Kehoe voiced her support for Filner at the Harvey Milk Breakfast, held Friday, May 25. “This year, every citizen has such important decisions to make. In our mayor’s race, we will elect, I hope, the best person to set a new course for our city. That’s why I’m supporting Bob Filner,” she said as she received the Lifetime Leadership Award.
Approximately 300 people attended the May 23 Filner for Mayor fundraiser, where Newsom announced his endorsement, at Rich’s San Diego in Hillcrest. The back room of the nightclub was standing room only as the Lt. Gov. took the stage.
Newsom said he is excited about the prospect of having a Democrat as mayor in San Diego.
“[Filner] will show real leadership,” Newsom said. “With him in City Hall, I know we can do great things together and throughout California. The future is not in front of you, it is inside of you, and you need someone in office who understands what’s at stake.”
Former San Diego Councilmember Donna Frye along with current City Commissioner and LGBT community activist Nicole Murray Ramirez joined Newsom on stage, praising Filner’s past accomplishments and future visions.
Councilman Carl DeMaio, the leader in most polls throughout the mayoral campaign, spent the morning visiting retirement homes and planned to spend the rest of today and Tuesday working phone banks.
Rep. Bob Filner, D-San Diego, whom the most recent survey placed second in the mayoral race, visited senior centers and Veterans Village of San Diego.
I would have had Filner visit the Hillcrest Farmers' Market.
Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, who hopes to edge out Filner for a spot on the November ballot, ran in the Rock'n' Roll Marathon Sunday, and today visited patients at Alvarado Hospital and greeted voters at Hodad's, the popular Ocean Beach burger hangout.
