Szekely is arguably the best-placed person on the planet to launch a wellness initiative of this magnitude because of her background. For the past 72 years, she has operated world-renowned spas based on her philosophies of treating your body as a temple, not polluting it with processed food, developing a lifestyle of physical activity and allowing your body to heal itself whenever possible. 90 years old for Deborah Szekely looks like a much younger woman. What does she know that we can learn? What is she doing that other seniors might want to do?
I had the opportunity this Spring to hear this most inspired woman, who happens to be, in my own way of thinking, not only the Godmother of Wellness, as some call her, but my personal Mother of the Essenes.
Essenes?
Her late husband, Edmond Bordeaux Szekely was the Co-founder of Rancho La Puerta, today the #1 Destination Spa in the World.
When Rancho La Puerta began, 73 years ago, it was started by a man a few decades Deborah's senior.
The first time I heard about Edmond Bordeaux Szekely was from another man I admire, Michael Besancon, who retired recently as the #4 man at Whole Foods Market, told me about a book he liked, "The Essene Gospel of Peace." At the time, Michael was one of the head hippies at a little cafe called "Follow Your Heart." in Canoga Park, California. Michael was my original Avocado sandwich maker. Back then, when I first met Michael and he introduced me to "The Essene Gospel of Peace," I was a senior at what was to become Cal State University Northridge. The lady who brought me in for my first avocado sandwich was Janice Hinkston. I was a writer then for a paper called the San Fernando Sun, and Janice wanted me to write about the Santa Susana Mountains. I did, and today, there is an enormous State Park there, that
Janice felt came out of the words I wrote.
"The Essene Gospel of Peace" was one of the many books "touched" by the hand of the late "Profressor," as Dr. Szekely was called.
The year I first heard of "The Essene Gospel of Peace" was 1970. Fast forward to 1977. That was the year I first met the Professor in San Diego. That was the year I was ordained as one of his last Essene Ministers.
To keep it simple, I call myself Your Enchanted Gardener.
The Essene Gospel of Peace
The book, "The Essene Gospel of Peace," the first time I read it, was way too much. I could not possibly have applied the teachings in the book that is said to have converted more people at one time to vegetarianism than any other in the 20th Century.
That is not to say that the professor himself was always a vegetarian, or that I am not always a meat eater. What I can say--to update this story, is that Rancho La Puerta is one of the most beautiful and awe inspiring places in my entire world. If it had not been for Deborah Szekely, I do not believe that the professor, who lounged a bit on the esoteric side of life, would be what it is today.
Deborah Szekely Bottom Line
Another bottom line for me this Spring is that Deborah Szekely, who turned 90 May 3, has proclaimed a New Dream for the the US. Her dream is that many people--including all those whose life has been touched by Rancho La Puerta--will hear her call that this be a Wellness Spring. I can stand up for that.
For sure, the world would benefit from each of us being an Organic Uprising, each of us standing Up for Nature's Original Technology.
Label GMO's In California
Spring 2012 goes down in history as the moment when close to 1,000,000 people conspired through their signatures to put on the California Ballot a measure that says, Label GMOs.

I am setting out in 2012 to inspire thousands of new gardeners. I set this intention when I spoke at Organic Listening Day at the USDA in Washington September 20, 2011, and volunteered to be the Enchanted Gardener for the People's Garden Initiative. The beginning: We can each grow some of our own food in containers and get our beat back with nature. I travel with a silver box that contains the deepest dreams of humanity, and a pot where you are invited to Plant Your Dream. I hand out seeds to others as well and encourage their planting. We have reached a tipping point of consumer initiative thanks to so many divergent voices coming together. A literal grassroots movement of gardeners will inspire the White House, Congress, and its Federal agencies to come to terms with Real Food Safety; this includes GMO proliferation. Our Food Emergency is my pressing issue of the 2012 campaign. As a consumer movement, the Right to Know Initiative reached near 1,000,000 signers in early May to get on the California Ballot. Now we are taking the next step at the ballot box this November. Washington is in the farm bed with Biotech Agriculture. Thousands more small gardeners are needed, and a new generation of organic farmers. We will ignite a movement of 10 million strong or more leading to 'Uncle Sam Marries "Anti" GMO.' "Grow a Healthier Pizza" is my contribution toward this victory through blogging, educating and planting strong intentions.

I will caravan to the National Heirloom Expo, September 11,12,13 in Santa Rosa, CA. This event falls less than two months before the election and features some of our big anti GMO hitters, including Jeffrey Smith and Vandana Shiva. This Expo is a rally point for winning the campaign to Label GMOs in California.
