The Training of the Human Plant was dedicated in 1907

DEDICATED TO THE SIXTEEN MILLION PUBLIC SCHOOL CHILDREN OF AMERICA AND TO THE UNTOLD MILLIONS UNDER OTHER SKIES

At the USDA headquarters, in September 2011, I visited the People's Organic Garden. I use the word "Organic" here, as my underscore. The Garden Project was official started in 2009 by Sec of Ag Tom Vilsack with the inspiration as well of Assistant Secretary Kathleen Merrigan. The garden was intended to be Organically grown, as Sec Vilsack said himself in this Video.

On September 20, 2011, I volunteered to be the Organic Gardener for the Peoples Organic Garden Initiative. This offer was received positively by organic farmer Mark Lipson, who organized the Organic Listening Day at USDA headquarters.

There have been a number of moments in my life that I have felt my earth shake. September 20, was one of those days.

Through the support of Feng Shui with Lurrae, the words I spoke at USDA headquarters were recorded.

On that day, I handed the program invite to Mark and he wrote this note to me. The following night, Lurrae and I traveled to Baltimore. Our opening event was the Organic Trade Association Gala. Mark was one of two men being honored that night for OTA leadership awards.

Mark spoke for about 20 minutes. The Organic Listening Day was coordinated to the timing when numbers of the national organic ledership would be in the area. It was by serendipity that that very day I had planned to be in Washington D.C. was also the time for the Organic Listening Day, September 20, 2011.

This was around the Fall Equnox. The morning of the session, there was a gentle rain. The day before I visited the People's Garden. I met a very special employee, Ardis, who gave me a personal tour. Lurrae and I made videos. We again returned to the People's Garden, the following Day with Karin Dubois Towe, who is a spokeswoman for the Unseen Was on American Family Farmers, as detailed in the film Farmageddon.

At the OTA Gala, Mark Lipson Singled me out and I Took a Bow

At the OTA Gala, Mark Lipson signaled me out. He was talking about the Organic Listening Day. He said, that it was not every day that he had an Enchanted Gardener show up at USDA Headquarters. He said that I reminded him of his own personal relationship to the Garden there.

Truly that Garden on the Mall is a magnificent demonstation site for what can be wherever there are government building. The USDA now has People's Gardens around the world.

I See and Seed 1,000,000 More People's Organic Gardens

I want to see 1,000,000 more People's Organic Gardens, and many of these at schools. My initial inspiration is to inspire 1,000,000 youth to regain their confidence that they can grow some of their own food.

Keep The Beet Media Star, The World's FIrst Talking Beet Plant

Opening Lines from The Training of the Human Plant

"During the course of many years of investigation into the plant life of the world, creating new forms, modi- fying old ones, adapting others to new conditions, and blending still others, I have constantly been impressed with the similarity between the organization and development of plant and human life."

Keep The Beet Steps Up to the Plate!

This is where Keep The Beet Media Star, The World's FIrst Talking Beet Plant fits in. Keep the Beet and I got together about four years ago now. Keep The Beet is a magical character, a talking organic beet. She speaks from a beet's point of view and gives information and Enchanted Garden Wisdom Teachings Her Mission is to bring forth an international movement called Beet Keepers, Return!

Keep The Beet, as the magical story goes, writes on the Plant Your Dream Blog, so don't be too surprised if you find her popping up here and there. She is my constant company on the road, an organic beet, that travels in a pot.

Keep The Beet is also intended to be a Cartoon Character

Keep The Beet is also intended to be a cartoon character. I commission the artist Liora Leah to draw her, and this is the original drawing that Liora made.

The Training of the Human Plant

The training of the Human Plant contains a number of the teachers that are shared by Keep The Beet. In our Magical story, Keep the Beet and Luther Burbank are kin. All vegetables applaud this marvelous man who helped Ireland come out of disaster when they were starving.

Ireland was in starvation because they had followed the same principles that we are following today...extreme monoculture.

There are hundreds of kinds of potatoes. Ireland was growing one potato. This is called monoculture. When you grow one kind of potato the gene pool gets weakened. Then, when a vector hits, if it wipes out that one kind of food, you have no food left! That is what happened in Ireland.

The Training of the Human Plant has some ideas that are strange to our time, but were based on the principles of Plant Breeding as Burbank saw them. Other ideas are time tested. His understanding of how much youth needed nature, and nature youth, are the main Beet Keeper, Return teachings we want to offer up beginning in 2012.

Our Youth are in a Sad State of Health

Luther Burbank dedicated his book, "The Training of the Human Plant" to the 16 million school age youth.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from the book:

More to Come...

About the Author--Luther Burbank

Born in Lancaster, Massachusetts in 1849, Burbank was brought up on a farm and received only an elementary education. At age 21 he purchased a 17-acre tract near Lunenberg, Massachusetts, and began a 55-year plant breeding career.
During his lifetime Luther Burbank developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants, including 113 varieties of plums and prunes, 10 varieties of berries, 50 varieties of lilies and the Freestone peach.

In 1871 he developed the Burbank potato, which was introduced in Ireland to help combat the blight epidemic.

He sold the rights to the Burbank potato for $150, which he used to travel to Santa Rosa, California. In Santa Rosa, he established a nursery garden, greenhouse, and experimental farms that have become famous throughout the world.

To the end of his life Luther Burnak was a naturalist and a lover of the wilderness.

DIFFERENTIATION IN TRAINING

I WISH to lay special stress upon the
absurdity, not to call it by a harsher
term, of running children through the
same mill in a lot, with absolutely no
real reference to their individuality. No
two children are alike. You cannot
expect them to develop alike. They
are different in temperament, in tastes,
in disposition, in capabilities, and yet
we take them in this precious early age,
when they ought to be living a life of
preparation near to the heart of nature,
and we stuff them, cram them, and
overwork them until their poor little

brains are crowded up to and beyond
the danger-line. The work of breaking
down the nervous systems of the chil-
dren of the United States is now well
under way. It is only when some one
breaks absolutely away from all prece-
dent and rule and carves out a new place
in the world that any substantial prog-
ress is ever made, and seldom is this
done by one whose individuality has
been stifled in the schools.
