2nd long fast, 30 days in - tips and review

Date:   3/14/2012 1:07:16 AM ( 12 y ago)

Hit day 30 today, so a good day for a review. We just had a long weekend here and I tired myself out staying up late with friends, going on trips to the forest - then today running a fundraising sausage sizzle. So I'm a bit bushed, temporarily I'm sure, and it's a good afternoon for a little time researching and reviewing - So far I've fairly flown along on this fast, it's seemed quite short and I've had no problems at all - Have lost about 17, 18 lbs now and been into the gym regularly with plenty of energy to go for it - Haven't really hit much of any kind of low emotionally or energetically - It's been inspiring and easy. Now and then the boredom of not having food, missing the flavor gets to me - and I'll taste something like a half a spoonful of pesto or whatever - I've been fasting primarily on a variety of water, teas with pollen infused honey and this time round I made the discovery of home made ginger nectar which has just been great - Sort of like the master cleanse drink but add fresh ginger nectar and I've also been adding kombucha tea to this once or twice a day, I feel great - it's very nice to drink, much easier on the teeth and tastebuds than the straight up lemonade - and still has all the cleansing benefits. I never seem to be able to do very long without some milk in tea a few times a day - but to get off the dairy a bit I made my own peanut milk this fast - For me, I'm not a fasting purist - I stick to a liquid diet, I don't generally do juices, bee pollen and honey are the main sources of nutrition and keeping my blood sugar fairly stable and it's mainly about shutting the gates of digestion and giving my system a break and chance to detox. Different things work for different people - I've been learning over many years of fasting now and it's become easier and I'm going a lot longer than I ever did in the past.

Got myself some mineral water the other day, and have been loving that - thinking to myself, why did I not think of this before, it's great - no doubt I could use the minerals, and it's so pleasant - I find it hard to just drink water a lot of the time unless I've gone and really raised a sweat exercising, so think this is a good way to go for me as I love drinking it - very palatable. You can get to a point sometimes deep into fasting where you go through some kind of frustration - it's to do with the deprivation from flavor mostly I believe - Something we can take for granted when we eat, but something so important to our states of mind and emotion. I don't know how people do long water fasts - it amazes me, I've tried a few days like that and couldn't hack it - not even the deprivation of flavors, but just got physically dehydrated and weak and had to stop ?? Maybe I'll try again one day but not very inspired to :)

I'm thinking with this fast - to make it my longest perhaps - I will always go with my body, more than a number at the end of the day - but the number is a loose goal - I'm thinking 60 days, and maybe around the 40 day mark to start changing it into a juice fast for the last 20 - I don't want too much sugar in my system, so it would have to be a lot of veg juices more so than fruit - a little of both would be fine though - Never really done this before so might give it a try this fast. After that, I think I'll slowly go onto some broths and kitchari - and just stick to a very simple kitchari, brown rice, seaweed broth and maybe a bit of avacado - pumpkin etc - that sort of thing and just eat really simple for the next 60 days before adding much else. I love brown rice - I think I could just eat that with a bit of avacado for weeks on end - sometimes our bodies appreciate the most simple fare - I've done a few short kitchari cleanses and felt fantastic on them.

Was reading in here about adding psyllium husks during the breaking period of the fast - that sounds like a great idea - got myself an enema kit for the first time and started using it last week and felt so good after that - Sold on that one, will keep it up regularly - I used to do the swf but haven't for a long time - I wouldn't say it's necessacary, the body really does take care of itself once you shut down digestion - even enemas, I wouldn't say they are necessacary, but they help - you can feel the difference, they really make you shine and help a lot in assisting to get more old sludge moving out of your system. Amazing how long we continue to eliminate! I read on here today someone talking about still eliminating after 145 days of juice fasting... Really is incredible - It makes me wonder, is that all old stuff, or is our body still creating these solids even from the nutrients in the liquids we are taking in? Maybe its a bit of both? I'm big into these Young Living Essential Oils, so use a bit of them during the fast, diffuse them, ingest them sometimes, and add them to the enema water - they're just great to add in, so uplifting, invigorating, relaxing, you name it - depends on the plant essence you are using, but they can be really helpful - also just to shift you out of a little emotional wobble or whatever you might be dealing with. I don't really get cravings or hunger - Don't get tired days more than once in a blue moon, and if that comes up I'll just rest - lucky for me my schedule is my own so I can do this and just go with my feeling. Might get a bach flower essence to work with - trying to shift my own emotional lows over a painful separation I don't think will last forever - but hard to miss someone you adore :)

I really should post some of my tips and recipes here, for the ginger nectar, some ingredients to look out for - things like kitul treacle and how great that is - and bee pollen, the best stuff ever! I'll try and do a little blurb to help others here like that from all my experience. All for now - going to continue on my research for a bit, will post again soon, let you all know how I'm going round day 40 if not sooner. Best luck to all those reading working on their own health & wellbeing!
