You're right about glyphosate not breaking down in the environment too quickly. I worked as an extractionist in an agricultural testing lab for several years, and my main task was testing grains for glyphosate. It was in MOST of the samples I tested, and these were food products being shipped internationally. That's one of the scariest qualities of this particular herbicide - it just hangs around in your driveway, and lawn (and fields) for years, not to mention your liver.
Its frustrating when Monsanto says things like "well, these tests are not at realistic concentrations..." Frustrating because there are whole organs in our bodies that act as filters, which end up accumulating the toxins that the body doesn't know what to do with. The concentration in ones lawn may not be dangerous, but what about the concentration in your liver or kidneys?
Anyway, don't want to start a flame war with any lawn-care enthusiasts, but I wont touch that stuff. Weed-pulling is a good excuse for me to get outside. :P

WEED KILLER: New research has found that an 'inert' ingredient in the herbicide Roundup can kill human embryonic, placental, and umbilical cord cells

Used in yards, farms and parks throughout the world, Roundup has long been a top-selling weed killer. But now researchers have found that one of Roundup’s inert ingredients can kill human cells, particularly embryonic, placental and umbilical cord cells.
The new findings intensify a debate about so-called “inerts” — the solvents, preservatives, surfactants and other substances that manufacturers add to pesticides. Nearly 4,000 inert ingredients are approved for use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
In addition, the EPA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture both recognize POEA as an inert ingredient. Derived from animal fat, POEA is allowed in products certified organic by the USDA. The EPA has concluded that it is not dangerous to public health or the environment.
The French team, led by Gilles-Eric Seralini, a University of Caen molecular biologist, said its results highlight the need for health agencies to reconsider the safety of Roundup.

A short documentary by Frontline (U.S. TV series) suggested that farmers using genetically modified seeds promoted by Cargill and Monsanto have led to rising debts and forced some into the equivalent of indentured servitude to the moneylenders.[100] Every thirty minutes an Indian farmer commits suicide and in the last sixteen years, more than a quarter of a million farmers have died.[101]

While there may be other factors involved besides GM crops, Monsanto has, predictably, refused to accept any responsibility for the suicides [10].
Glyphosate toxicity to humans
In 1985 a Monsanto researcher assured his readership that 'Glyphosate effectively controls 76 of the world's 78 worst weeds… and is essentially non-toxic to other life forms' (1). How reassuring if this were true. However, in 1991/92 reports appeared in the medical literature of humans being poisoned by glyphosate (2, 3). True, they attempted to commit suicide and drank a whole glass of Roundup concentrate. Still, if you would drink a whole glass of water, which is essentially non-toxic you would get a different result.
It turned out that if you were under 40 years of age and got timely medical assistance you would probably survive, but if you were 50 years and over you would probably die (2, 3). These 'results' are similar to a pharmaceutical company testing a new drug with a huge overdose. Then the evaluations start.
