An extraordinary number of concerned residents turned out to the September 11 meeting of the Topanga Creek Watershed Committee to voice their opposition to using herbicides to kill arundo donax, the giant reed plant, in Lower Topanga.

They came bearing signs saying “No herbicides in Topanga” and brought their children with them to drive home the point that accumulating chemical pollutants in the environment are believed responsible for unusual childhood health and learning problems that might be endangering their future.


JOBS OR ROUNDUP?

Suzanne Goode, an ecologist with State Parks, said she thought transfer into the soil was unlikely.

But the teenager countered, “Little by little, it’s going to add up.”

Several people at the meeting suggested that with the economy as it is, it would be a great time to employ laborers to cut out arundo manually, instead of assisting a subcontractor in exposing a team of low-wage workers to glyphosate. Their job will be the tedious work of cutting arundo and then, within 90 seconds, carefully painting herbicide on each stem.

Topanga also has a willing pool of volunteers.

THIS IS ONE PLAN OF ACTION FOR REMOVING ARUNDO DONAX

Look out extensive this report is.

My neighbor wants to remove a stand here using Roundup. She does not want to have to deal with the return of the plant again.

I DO NOT SEE A PLAN IN PLACE

I do not see a plan in place other than a desire to paint the roots of the Arundo Donax with Roundup, imagining that this simple action is all that is needed.


It will cost $1000.00 likely to get rid of it.

I would like to see a non-chemical approach to doing this.
