MESSAGE SENT

Dear Miriam, I have been studying your work on the internet this morning. I included you in a Plant Your Dream Blog. I am also very involved with interfaith work. It is a gift to meet you. R'Goldie is one of my allies.

This past weekend I did an event to help Sharon Alexander do a Shir Ecstasy Jospel-Jewish Gospel Choir-- in San Diego. She is doing marvelous work that has interfaith implications.

There is one scene in a video I will be making where they are singing Ilu Finu at the Farmers' Market.

I wanted to let you know that I am using the song in a video I am making, and wanted to ask permission of you.

I would like to know more about your inspiration in writing this song.

Another friend of mine told me this morning that their is a photo of Elihu MaLean in my first video with Reb Aryeh Hirshfield zt" L was was also an ally.

I have a sense that God may be cooking up something here
between us beyond what I see now.

I am a popular internet blogger with 3.6 million page views on one site.

So let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

SEARCHING FOR THE AUTHOR OF
THIS SONG

Searching for the author of this song
sung by Shir Ecstasy at the Hillcrest Farmers' Market
Sunday August 14 before the eve of
Tu'Av. I wanted to ask permission to use
it in my video

ORGANIC MOMENT: An ALEPH KALLAH JOURNEY
WITH SHIR ECSTASY

The world appeared to be saying
no to Sharon Alexander, originator of
the Shir Ecstasy Jospel--Jewish Gospel Choir.
She gave a rousing performance in the Closing
Ceremony at the Aleph Kallah 2011, the
international Gathering of the Alliance of Jewish Renewal leaders
held at the University of Redlands, in the beginning of June.

In retrospect, I understand there was a meeting
in the closing hours of the week long gathering.
Sharon had come in from Switzerland for the Aleph Kallah.
She was not going to leave the Los Angeles area until
August 18. She asked if anyone would sponsor her
to give a workshop in San Diego.

Leaders of the San Diego Jewish Renewal movement,
said, "no." in various takes.

No one felt they could take it on.

Maybe it was something that ate or were eating.
(pardon the gab...)

I came to the ALEPH Kallah for self healing,
and also to launch a New Sacred Food Project.
I was feeling discouraged and tired through parts
of the weekend and thought I might leave
for a more hospitable gathering in San Diego
that called me, but hour by hour I was held
back from leaving.

By Saturday night, I was tired, but then,
a sparking full of energy teen was on stage
performing. My Soul perked up.
I went up to her after she got off the stage
to tell her I thought she was the spark of the Choir.
I asked her name. I did not realize at the time
that she was the daughter of an old ally of mine,
Sharon Alexander, or did I realize that
Sharon Alexander, her mother, was head of
the Jospel--Gospel Choir.

I only knew that Sharon had been one of my allies
back in 1997 in Colorado, the last time I ventured out
to an ALEPH KALLAH.

Somehow, I came to realize that this sparky teen
was the daughter of Sharon Alexander.
I asked where she was.
The teen could not tell me.

My departure from the Aleph Kallah 2011 was delayed
through the morning Sunday.

I was determined to find a farm that I heard was on campus.
I would not give up, after repeated attempts.
The farm delayed me from leaving,
and in the process I kept having more and more
ALEPH Kallah Adventures.

I was engaging more and more souls
and each was a part of my healing.

Finally, it was time to leave, but I decided
to go one more time to look for that farm.

PHOTO OF ARIELLA SHIRA
BY JOY KRAUTHAMMER

I now had a map and two allies, AriellaShira
and Gloria Krasno, two ALEPH Kallah veterans.
It was AriellaShira that wanted me to come to
the ALEPH Kallah in a big way. She is one of
my main Jewish spaces of love.

I was waiting to connect with AriellaShira
who was checkout out of her room,
I saw that sparky teen again.

She was about to get into a car to leave
the ALEPH Kallah.

It was then I realized that the woman
in the driver's seat was Sharon Alexander.
She did not look the same as she looked
to me in 1997.

She did not recognize me either.

WHAT CAME OUT OF THAT FIRST
ENCOUNTER

What came out of that first encounter
was Part ONE, or ACT ONE
of my ALEPH KALLAH, Job's Return Journey.

HERE IS THAT VIDEO

It took me more than 60 hours to made this
video!!!

After I was spent and on vapors from making it,
I read in a note from the B'nai Horin Community
about the various members who had been at the Kallah.
I wanted to send the video I made up to hello,
hoping to get some juices back.

What I got was a stone in my cup,
no offense intended.

My main Rabbi ally, Stan Levy, took one look
at send me back a quick email. It said the film was
good, but under no circumstance could I release it
without the written permission of the publisher and
estate of Debbie Friedman. Little did I know that
it was O.K. for Sharon Alexander to sing a rendition
of "Sow In Tear's, Reap in Joy!" but using the song they
sang in my video, was a copyright violation.

I was in shock.
Stan also told me that he did not believe the estate
would give me permission to use the song because
my video was not professional enough, or something like that.
They only wanted professional recordings of Debbie out there.
This did not make too much sense. There were already
other groups who had the same song on the internet
from her memorial in January 2011.

I was not only running into an authority issue here
with a Rabbi who held a powerful place in my reality,
but I was runing into a legal issue, a letter of the law,
issue that basically did not make too much sense,
but I knew I had to play by the rules.

Stan said that if I wrote an emall, he would forward it to the
estate, but he did not believe they would O.K. my video for use.
I called his wife, an ally, seeking to talk more about this.
I told her what happened. She agreed that I should take
the video off line immediately. I would be sued.

Stan, in terms out, was not only a friend of Debbie,
but an attorney who had worked with her.
He knew the estate.

My spirit did not rest.
It told me not to go the legal route.

I wanted to go the heart route.
I was determined to contact the family of Debbie Friedman
directly. This was not proving successful.

Then, I decided to contact the publisher.
I found the address of the Jewish Music Group on her CD.
I contacted them. Their was a kind man who told me
that the JMG no longer had the rights to her music.
He spent 20 minutes looking up the publisher, but could not
find a name for that song.

I had know Debbie personally.
I know if she had been alive, she would likely have given
me permission. I was with her in Stan's services
when she first sang the song.

It had personal meaning to me.
I grew a seed called Job's Tears.
It went with the song.
Debbie was supportive of my work.
She would come year after year to Stan's services.
I have videos of her, God forbid I release them!!!!!

One thing led to another.

The nice man who told me to get in touch with the publisher,
told me to write to her website.

I compose a heartfelt email, asking permission
to use a snippit of the song.

Two hours later I got a reply.
it said, "Use in Good Health."

He was the admin for her website.
I thought that would the green light!!!!

Then, I went ahead and put into another 20 hours
on the video.

When it was finished, I again sent it to Stan, my rabbi.
I was wanting his Blessing.

He told me that getting permission from the website admin
was not enough, even though was the spokesperson for the estate.

I had to get permission from the actually legal publisher.

He said he would get me the person to write to.

By this time, Stan seemed more on my team,
he told me what to say.

Again I choose Chesed approach.

I was basically letting the publisher know that I was
given permission by the website admin in behalf of her estate,
but wanted the publisher to note for the legal record that
I was using a snippit of the song as sung by the Shir Ecstasy Choir.

He basically, gave me the green light.
I now had written permission.

I sent the video to Stan, this time again asking for his
Blessing on the video. That was all I wanted from the beginning,
a Yes from a Jewish man in a position of authority who I admired.

Stan finally wrote to be that the video
was indeed Blessed. Being a perfectionist,
I doubt if it met his critical eye.
It was likely being kind.
I am not sure if watched the full ten minute long piece.

Others, however did comment.

Rabbi Wayne Dosick, my local Rabbi said;

Joy Krauthammer, one of my editors on the project
said:

By the time I was really to let the world know
about the video, I was indeed spent,
but figured I would pick my a second wind
for the project later.

SAYING YES TO HELP SHARON ALEXANDER

When, sharon Alexander saw my first edition,
she began to include me in on her search to fulfill
her dream. She wanted to do a workshop in San Diego.

I did not realize at the time, that the San Diego insiders
of Jewish Renewal had basically in their own heads
nixed her from coming here.

No one wanted to take on the project,
knowing how much work it would be and how
little time there was to make a successful program.

Rabbi Wayne Dosick runs the Elijah Minyan in San Diego
that works hand in hand respectfully with the Shir HaYam group.

He is an outstanding promoter of events,
but likes to take many months to make them happen.
He is excellent at fundraising and getting pre-sponsores
to ensure that the incoming speaker or talent,
gets a good healthy stipend.

He did not feel an event with Sharon, organized
within a two month period could succeed.
He wanted nothing to do with this.

I already had my plate full, but knew of a place
where Sharon could do a workshop.
I thought that was the main issue, a place.

I had not idea that when I hooked her up finally
with the Prosperity HIve, run by my friend Cara Cadwallader,
that I was signing on to be the event planning
and main promoter! Good God!

A week before showtime,
I was immersed in another project,
setting up details to go to Baltimore,
as well as my normal full plate activities.

Rhonda Mason, one of my closest allies
also agreed to help and got the support
from the Shir HaYam group, but then
she disappeared for a week on vacation.
The day of the event, she came in from out of town
at 6 pm. The event was due to begin at 6:30 pm.

This was not to mention that the from August 3 on,
we were in a three week Mercury Retrograde period.
In my life, that mean astrologically that anything that
can go wrong, will go wrong unless you are going super
slow and completely dotting checking your steps organically.

THE MAIN CHALLENGE

The main challenge to the success of the event
was getting the word out during Mercury Retrograde,
and that I was basically single-handedly,
with some help from Rhonda, David her husband,
and Cindy Fissell, mailing out some announcements.

By August 13, I had no indication that anyone
was coming, and I was basically spent.

The main attraction that weekend was
an incredible wedding celebration.
I went Saturday morning to a shabbat in the home
of the bride and groom.

The energy was marvelous,
and the smooze healing.

On the way out, I had permission to post
a flyer on the door by the bride.

I got a commitment from one person to attend,
and this was big.
