Shir Ecstasy!

Sharon Alexander has spent 30 years at the forefront of the Jewish Renewal Movement, as a choir leader, community organizer, teacher, vocalist, and visionary. Since 2003 she has been researching the use of gospel choir techniques, and teaching them to Jewish choirs. Ordained by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi as a Ba’alat Shirei Hama’alot B’chesed Elyon (Leader of Sacred Chorales), currently she is completing her doctorate in Ethnomusicology at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

The word "Shir" means song in Hebrew. The idea behind "Shir Ecstasy"

is about ascending together through the medium of song to reach that rapturous state

where one can viscerally sense the presence of God. Sharon's gift is to bring people of all vocal talents together.

Dial 010 on the box left of the door to be buzzed into the Hive. Or, call (619) 779-1944 to announce your arrival. The Hive is at the top of the Art Center on the east side of theNew School of Architecture in East Village, Downtown San Diego. We can't wait to receive YOU!
Parking and arriving:
When applicable, please walk and/or ride your bicycle to the Hive. Carpooling is always an option, as well. Invite a friend or make one the next time you come to the Hive!
On parking and walking in East Village:
After 6pm and on Sunday, parking at meters on the street are FREE.
You can also park in our FREE lot located on the southwest corner of 13th and G Streets.


Walking in the dark to an event in a new neighborhood can be scary. What's more is that East Village, on the outset, doesn't look that "friendly," However, it is! Our neighbors who "live outside" are also our friends. They know who we are and who the Hive is, so if you're questioning yourself then just ask one of them for help. Acknowledging people as people is the surest way to calm your fears. What's more is that we have one of the largest police stations in town just blocks away.
When you arrive at the door marked #740, Buzz 010 at the intercom on 13th, between F and G Streets, & head up to the 5th floor, #503. Please call (619) 779-1944 if the door does not buzz & let you in. (Make energy ~ Take the stairs unless you REQUIRE help.)
Upon arrival at our door, please take your shoes off, and come on in. Be sure to leave us your contact information as well as a financial contribution at the front table.
