MY SUBMITTED COMMENT

This is my comment to the AMS
That I submitted on July 27, 2011
Docket ID: AMS-FV-09-0029

I appreciate the USDA wanting to help us have safer food, however this Green Leafy Marketing Agreement is ill advised if we truly want a healthy economy and better health for our people. Serious education is needed to return to an organic and sustainable lifestyle, each of us being an Organic Uprising, Standing Up for Nature’s Original Technology. I urge all involved to continue to make contact with the USDA, FDA, USDA Codex Office, and the President about these important issues that will only be resolved through an honest Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Food. A serious reeducation is needed. I urge the AMS to drop these agreements. They will further lead us in a direction away from solving the inherent problem that we need many more local organic farmers, and less Big Ag monoculture centralized farms that are disease producers and contrary to the laws of nature. I sense that Big Ag, who wants this is threatened by more and more people supporting local organic farmers. They do not want to pay the price for the outbreaks of e coli and bacteria that come from a system of ag that cannot possibly work. Food is Sacred. It was not intended to make profit its primary purpose. We want Leafy Green Marketing Agreements that encourage nutrition per ace more than profit per acre. Be well, see you all on the Plant Your Dream Blog. Come visit us at the Hillcrest Farmers’ Market. Our farmers and shoppers will show you why we love good healthy food grown organically.

TO GET A GIST OF THE IMPACT OF THE LEAFY
GREEN MARKETING AGREEMENT ON CALFORNIA
ORGANIC FARMERS IN 2009 GO HERE

from an article by Carolyn Lockhead
in the SF Chronicle July 13, 2009

Invisible to a public that sees only the headlines of the latest food-safety scare – spinach, peppers and now cookie dough – ponds are being poisoned and bulldozed. Vegetation harboring pollinators and filtering storm runoff is being cleared. Fences and poison baits line wildlife corridors. Birds, frogs, mice and deer – and anything that shelters them – are caught in a raging battle in the Salinas Valley against E. coli O157:H7, a lethal, food-borne bacteria.

In pending legislation and in proposed federal regulations, the push for food safety butts up against the movement toward biologically diverse farming methods, while evidence suggests that industrial agriculture may be the bigger culprit.

Joe Rodriguez Jr, of the fifth generation
Rodriguez farming family and JR Organics,
holds up one of his micro-nutrient rich
local organic lettuces that are sold
healthyfully to thousands of shoppers
at the Hillcrest Farmers' Market and other
FM in San Diego. He and other San Diego local growers
such as Sage Mountain Farm, and Suzie's Farm
welcome all in Washington, the FDA, and
USDA to come out and learn how to grow
healthy Leafy Greens without the need
for further arm shackling red tape,
or going into more unholy
alliances with Big Ag and their USDA
backed Leafy Green Management Agreement
Agendas. Now is the time for 20,000 of us
to speak our minds on this issue before
July 29, 2011 at best, but for sure,
speak your mind now.

O.K. TEAM, RIGHT NOW
AND CALL NOW!

O.K. Team, All together now.
"Lettuce" Grow Together.

Can you hear the calling out, Two Leggeds?
Heathy organically grown Lettuce is talking loud and clear to us today.
It refuses to lose this battle. There is a battle.

Before July 29, 2011
contact our USDA Secretary of
Ag Tom Vilsack, the man who said
"Know Your Farmer. Know Your Food."

Remind Tom:

We already have a perfect technology for
growing leafy greens and lettuce of all kinds;
it is Nature's Original Technology
applied by caring growers who are more interested
in nutrition per acre than profit per acre.

Now is the day for an Organic Uprising.
By the end of Thursday, July 28, We the People,
please speak up!

We will not allow healthy lettuce, a basic tossed
salad ingredient we love, to be tossed out
of our lives by shackling small and midsize organic
farmers with One Size Fits All draconian regulations
coming from places so high that they may even
be beyond our borders. These forces
reflected in our own USDA, our FDA Office of food,
our USDA Codex Alimentarius Office; and from
the White House itself through the will of
our respected President Barack Obama, are
attempting to shove onto our plates
severe unneeded red tape, that many
are concerned will harm and hamper
diversity of farms and healthy organic
growing practices. Our local organic farmers
already have enough red tape. They do not need more!

We, all of us, together today, respectfully say
no to unwieldy E. coli producing BIg Ag that wants now
to further dictate how we, as believer's in
America The Beautiful, will grow our
lettuce seeds and our "Amber Waves of Grain"

PLEASE REVIEW THE LYRICS
TO THE SONG AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL HERE

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

OF FOOD DEMOCRACY NOW

http://curezone.com/blogs/fm.asp?i=1839576

This is the email that sparked my wake up
call that the Green Leafy Marketing Agreement
was in a comment period before the USDA
that was going to end at 11;59 pm EST on
July 28, 2011.

I want to encourage you to read these blogs
and get updated on this important issue.
Although there is/was a time date to make comments,
the need to educate continues here on the Plant Your Dream Blog
about the underlying issues here.

The issues are not going away,
until this education happens.
We are in a food emergency,
and as of July 27, 2011,
I am convinced most members of the USDA,
FDA, House of Congress mean well, but
we do not understand the fundamentals of
growing healthy food nor healthy people.
I see us looking back 1000 years from now
at a time in the History of Peace on Earth
when we realized a Shift had occurred.
I am convinced we will make the right decisions.

A sound economy is based on little children
and parents, and other grown people
being able to Plant Your Dream.

It takes whole, pure, natural food, fresh and organic
to have this building materials for dreams to come true.

I am willing to go to Washington if needed to help
explain why we need to invest in the Bank of Compost
if we want to get out of our current economic mess
and health mess.

WE ARE ALL HUMANS

After writing all day on this blog,
I decided to call the Sec of Ag Tom Vilsack
at the USDA. I wanted to include his phone number.

I spend a long time waiting for someone
to pick up. Finally, someone did.

Then they put me on hold.
This is obviously a very busy phone to call.

The lady was kind.
She was apologetic that it took so long to get back to
me. Then she directed me to another man who works
at USDA who was extremely helpful.

I asked him how the weather was.
He said about 110 degrees.

I asked him about the USDA organic garden that grows
there. He told me it was right outside next door.

I asked him how long he worked for the USDA.
He said two years, and that he had worked in Washington
21 years, long enough to become part of the problem.

I felt that was so endearing.

I asked if he knew Kathreen Merrigan, the assistant
to Sec Tom Vilsack. He said he did.

I had kind words for her.

I know she is part of the inspiration behind the
Know Your Farmer. Know Your Food, UDSA project.
She has leanings toward organic.

It was wise for Sec Tom Vilsack to have someone there
who can shore up his weak point.

I told the gentleman on the phone that I might be in
Washington at the end of September. I told him
I wanted to visit the USDA garden.

He was welcoming.

He gave me his direct line.

He told me to call back if I had any other questions.

He spent ten minutes with me.
He helped me look up the link here to the
actual information in the Federal Register.

Then he gave me the phone of the person
and email of the person who I could direct by
comment to about this National Leafy Marketing Agreement.

I had been writing on my high horse all day,
but I was stopped in my tracks.

It goes back to my basic philosophy of life.
If we can just make friends, we can work anything out.

I know that Washington is broke now.

All the money is in the pockets of Monsanto Corp,
and so they are paying the bills to some extent.

Money does talk. The president looks to them
because this is where the money is.

I believe he is a good man, but even a good man
may not know the right answers unless he is surrounded
by friends and allies who can help and point out a better way.

I am naive enough to believe I can serve such a role
in Washington.

What other choice have we got?

I am not a fighter.

I do not like to attack.
I like to build up.

I feel all the things I said here and in the sister
blog is true, but if we do not talk and get on the same page,
we are all living in different worlds.

I have planted seeds with Robert Fraley, Phd,
the father of Round Up Ready herbicide.
I have been press at the AAAS, the most important
conference of science in the US.

I know that GE is accepted as safe by the White house.
The White House is not only under the influence of
First Lady Michelle Obama. It is also under the influence
of Michael R. Taylor, our Commissioner of Foods.

I look forward to meeting Michael R. Taylor who
I consider one of the most influential men in
the history of food in the last 25 years.

It makes me think.

If we want to win over our point of view,
we need to close the gap and talk.

That is what I said to Dr. Robert Fraley of
Monsanto.

He agreed with me.

We need to lessen the tension so we can hear one
another.

Leslie

What????

Read this about Barry Logan of La Milpa
Organica Farm, a small farmer no longer
farming now.

EXCERPT FROM
THE HUFFINGTON POST BLOG
CHEWING ON FOOD SAFETY
October 6, 2010

What Washington knows about food has no ground from a beet's point of view. The cornerstone of authentic food safety is first of all, growing some of your own food, and second, having a personal relationship with the farmers growing the rest of your food. This is an ideal. How many of us live in places like San Diego where we can grow food 12 months of the year and get to know more than 100 local farmers by name?

At the bottom end of the scale of food growers are the micro farmers -- small food growers -- and everywhere now, from New York City to the West, people are returning to food growing. Micro farmers, in a truly healthy food safe economy need to be encouraged, yet currently they are falling between the cracks. For authentic food safety, we need more food growers, more gardeners and farmers, not less. We are being called to be a nation of gardeners. This is essential if we want to return to true food safety.

Micro farmers and gardeners growing on less than a few acres live by other codes. They grow food that is labor intensive. The 15% of people who still micro-farm are part of that tradition. Modern conventional food and its PR are ensuring a growing climate in America that is not good for small growers.

Take as an example the case of Barry Logan, who had a final harvest celebration September 18, 2010. Barry Logan, with the help of his live-in community, served San Diego for seven years with fresh food. I am talking about food that can turn health around. He sold food at three farmers' markets. His customers were his regulators. He had been running La Milpa Organica Farm as a social experiment, as an open university. He farmed on a small field, organically. His workers were from around the world. His customers became friends and he would invite them to the farm for potlucks and pizza each month. That life does not exist any more on that land.

I first heard these words HAACP
a few days ago for the first time
in this article:

HR2749 (The Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009) which is currently making its way rapidly through the House of Representative will put us out of business.

HR2749 calls for:

a yearly registration with the FDA with a $500 fee

full HACCP plan for every type of produce sold or processed, for us that mean one plan for the dairy, one one for cheese making, one for transporting and retailing at the market, one for the fruits and vegetables, and another one for the nuts

FDA approved methods by which crops are raised and harvested. The most likely outcome will be along the lines of the leafy green ordinance, scorched earth and exclusion of any wildlife.
