The royal family has long received sizable government subsidies for its vast landholdings, many of which are classified as agricultural property.

“As things stand, doing the right thing is penalized,” the prince said. “Has the time arrived that we need to take a long hard look at how public subsidies are geared?”

He said that governments should “grasp one of the biggest nettles of them all” by replacing the subsidies for food factories that mistreat animals and harm the land with incentives for a more humane and durable form of agriculture.

“The point,” he said, “is to achieve a situation where the production of healthy food is rewarded and becomes more affordable and the earth’s capital is not so eroded.”

Prince Charles was to meet with President Obama later Wednesday.

Research farm

The Seeds of Change Research Farm and Gardens were founded in 1989 in Gila, New Mexico.[3] In 1996 the Research Farm moved north to a site closer to the company's Santa Fe offices. The farm includes over a thousand varieties of plants on six acres of land originally cultivated by the Tewa people on a flood plain along the Rio Grande River in El Guique, New Mexico. The farm is certified organic by Oregon Tilth.

In August 2010, Mars, Incorporated announced that it would close the El Guique farm and move some management to Los Angeles. A final tour of the farm was provided on Saturday, August 14. A spokesperson for Mars indicated the closure was due to a "strategic shift" and that not all the employees would retain their jobs.[4] One farm employee was left as of August 14, 2010. Others were relieved of their jobs without prior notice about August 1, 2010.

Take 94 East to Euclid North exit. From the off-ramp, turn Right onto Euclid. At the fork, stay to the Right, this becomes 54th St. Travel on 54th until Chollas Parkway, turn Right on Chollas and park on your immediate Right. The farm site will be to your West, on the other side of 54th. Please use the crosswalk at Lea St. to cross over to the site.

From West or North:
Take 8 East to Fairmount Exit and turn Right onto Fairmount. Stay in the right lane and “exit” onto Montezuma. At the next light, turn Right onto Collwood (which will become 54th). Cross El Cajon Blvd., University Ave. and Lea St., then turn Left onto Chollas Parkway and park. The farm site will be to your West, on the other side of 54th. From East:
