Art:3 WaterColors by Mayah .....

REVISED! Three watercolor paintings done recently. Photos were taken after the art was framed and under glass so they are a bit fuzzy (plus I just noticed my shadow is on them, too!)

Watercolor and ink assemblage

You can't tell from the photo, but this is an assemblage. Each fruit was drawn, painted, and inked as a whole piece separately, then cut out. Then the bowl was drawn as a whole and cut out, as was the bowl handle. All of the pieces were then assembled and glued on top of one another, then onto the black art paper, which was glued onto a separate piece of watercolor paper painted yellow around the perimeter. The various thicknesses of the work gives it a bit of a 3-D look.

I really like doing the assemblage. It is actually easier to do than if the work was drawn all of one piece as you can arrange and re-arrange the pieces any way you like until you glue them, and it is more fun!

It reminds me of how much I loved to cut out paper dolls when I was a kid. I never played with the dolls, but the cutting out and assembling of their clothes was the fun part! When I was older, I sewed clothes by hand for my Barbie dolls and troll dolls (remember those cute/ugly little trolls?)--I did this until I was 13 years old! Never played with the dolls, but loved to cut out and sew the clothes!

"A Rose by Any Other Name" by Mayah 2-2011 11" X 14"
Watercolor wash, ink

This one and the one below are rather simple drawings made more dramatic with thick black lines. I like how the ink emphasizes the curving shapes of the rose petals with the contrasting jagged leaves, and the curving shape of the butterfly wings.
