What's in the food we eat? Unless it's certified as "organic", its almost guaranteed to contain ingredients derived from GE (genetically engineered) crops!

I received a very nice email from Sally Shepard who is the public relations representative for Newman's Own Organics, thanking me for the "Mother Earth Heals Award" that I gave to the company for their support of sustainable, organic agriculture and farm worker safety (See "Mother Earth Heals Award: Newman's Own Organics http://curezone.com/blogs/fm.asp?i=1765867


She answered my question about processed foods with the USDA Organic label on them. I was wondering if, for example, soy lecithin (an emulsifier that is commonly used in processed foods to hold the other ingredients together) could be derived from GE soy if it is not labeled as "organic" in a product with the USDA Organic seal on it.

As I wrote, the USDA seal assures that AT LEAST 95% of the ingredients in the package are organic, allowing AT MOST 5% non-organic ingredients. She writes: "companies who can use the USDA seal (95-100% organic) or (state)'made with organic' on the packages (70%-94% organic) can’t have any GE ingredients."

This is reassuring to know that the non-organic ingredients in packaged food with a USDA Organic seal CAN NOT have GE/GMO (genetically engineered/genetically modified organisms) ingredients in it.

However, food packages that are labeled "Natural" or have no labels at all stating "organic" on them have no such protections! That means NON-organic ingredients in these packages can be GE ingredients: soy, corn, canola, sugar beets (labeled as "sugar"), and cottonseed oil, and derivatives of these crops such as corn syrup, corn solids, soy lecithin, canola oil, etc.

Also, NON-organic MILK PRODUCTS--milk/cheese/yogurt/ice cream/cream cheese, etc and anything with MILK SOLIDS in it or WHEY (by-product from milk) may contain GE/bovine growth hormones. GE hormones cause the milk cows to produce more milk than they normally would, harming the cows. Some of the growth hormones leach into the milk products and have ill effects on people who consume them. http://www.organicconsumers.org/rbghlink.cfm

Additionally, meat or meat products NOT labeled "organic" or "organic grass fed", even if they are labeled "Natural", are derived from animals that have been FED non-organic and potentially GE crops. The chance of this will now increase since Monsanto's GE Round-up Ready Alfalfa has recently been approved by the USDA, as alfalfa is primarily used as an animal feed crop: http://action.foodandwaterwatch.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=5667

And, of course, any non-organic foods are going to contain ingredients that have been sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, and/or fungicides.
