SQUIRRELS
It was getting to be fall and there was already a chill in the air. The farm had a lot of oak trees, so there were a lot of acorns on the ground. My Grandfather and I liked to watch the squirrels run around gathering up the acorns to hide away for the winter.
One day, as we were watching the squirrels, my Grandfather asked me if I thought I could get the squirrels to get acorns out of my hands. I was young and didn't think about it, so I said I thought I could. Then he asked how I would go about that task. He asked me if I had noticed when the squirrels came around to gather the acorns. Yes, I had. We had been watching them in the mornings and evenings. Then he asked me if I thought it might work if I collected a lot of acorns and put them by the tree every day so the squirrels would get used to getting the acorns at that time. I thought this was a good idea, so I tried it. Sure enough, the squirrels would come around looking for the acorns by the tree. Then Grandfather asked me if I thought if I sat very still by the tree, and had the acorns near my feet, if the squirrels would get used to me there and not be afraid of me. Well, I thought that was a good idea and tried it.
Daily I would sit there quietly with the acorns near my feet and sure enough after awhile, the squirrels got used to me there and came and got the acorns. Then Grandfather asked me if I thought that if I put the acorns between my legs if still the squirrels would come to get them. I tried it and they did! Then, one day as I was sitting there quietly, I had a good idea! If I kept putting the acorns closer and closer to my hands, that eventually the squirrels would come and get the acorns out of my hands. Well, I tried it, and sure enough they did come and get the acorns out of my hands!
I was so happy! After the squirrels had left the area, I ran happily into the house to tell Grandfather. I was laughing, “Grandfather! I did it! The squirrels took the acorns out of my hands! I did it!” Grandfather laughed and grabbed me up in a big hug! "Yes, I was watching! You did it! You did it!"
