Surviving February by Karlin .....

Complaining is at an annual high in February. Be kind.

It gets tiresome to hear somebody complain about their pains when it is obvious they could have avoided their pains by doing something about it.

For Fibros, it gets tiresome to hear other's respond to our complaining of pains by dismissing it as "our own fault for not doing something about it".

Or, when they say "ya, but you have been doing nothing but sitting around for 5 months, what do you expect?"

Both sides are right - Fibros sit around due to pain, and when they move again it hurts a lot. Also, no matter how normal it is to have pain, such as when first starting to get in shape after a long idle winter, Fibro's feel it MORE - "Fibromyalgia is a disease of AMPLIFIED PAIN".

We are at a point in the year that could be "the low point". We have had 4 or 5 months of cold, wet, snow, and frozen rain and we are all tired of it. After February, it is reasonable to start hoping for signs of spring, and that we just might make it through this winter after all.

But DURING February, it is too soon to entertain such fantasies. We have to accept that "this is the way it is" for at least a few more weeks.

On top of that, this time of year is when we not only HEAR the most complaining, we are LEAST WILLING TO HEAR other people complain, because we have enough complaining of our own to do and nobody will listen to our complaints because they have their own complaining to do.

We are all fed up with hearing it, we have been hearing it for several months by this time of year. I would alter the famous Monty Python quote a little to suit this frame of mind - "we are sick and tired of being fed up with being sick and tired".

Due to all of the above, relationships might be strained at this time of year. My suggestion is to make an extra effort to keep things from deteriorating any further by being extra nice, by not complaining unless it is an emergency or if it is about something new. In the words of Plato - "Be kind to everyone you meet, for everybody is fighting a tough battle today".
