Subject: Correspondence from my state Senator...
This is the correspondence I recieved from Senator Akaka this morning:

Dear Mr. Cannamela:

Thank you for your comments on the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (H.R. 2751).

The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act is a strong, bipartisan bill that strengthens food health and safety protections for all Americans. I supported this bill when the Senate approved the measure on December 19, 2010. The House of Representatives passed the measure by a vote of 215 to 144 on December 21, 2010. The bill has been presented to President Barack Obama for his signature.

The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act makes needed changes to modernize America’s food safety system to protect our nation’s food supply and keep consumers safe from food-borne illnesses. I am especially pleased that the legislation that we passed includes exemptions from regulations for small farms and facilities. These exemptions protect family farms, which often sell their produce at farmers markets and road side stands. The measure does not outlaw traditional organic growing methods, criminalize seed savings, submit dietary supplements to international standards, such as Codex Alimenatrius, establish restrictions on the sale of raw milk, or require any new recordkeeping requirements for farms.

Again, mahalo for contacting me.

Aloha pumehana,
DANIEL K. AKAKA
U.S. Senator

TO PUNA FORAGER

Thank you for sending this to me. It is a good place to begin
Chewing on Food Safety. A National Conversation is needed.
I would like to know how many other senators agree or disagree with this, and here from others in the Sustainability field who have also looked at the journey of the measure toward law for 18 or more months.
