The Nation's lead News Reporter, Jon Stewart
gets in the fray as is clearly revealed in this
spoof that was on :The Daily Show.
"The Senate held hands, mostly, Tuesday night to pass the sweeping Food Safety Modernization Act by a vote of 73-25. The landmark food safety bill allows for increased federal inspections of food processing facilities and gives the FDA the authority to directly order recalls, shifting that power from a voluntary recall system determined exclusively by the offending companies themselves, when they feel like it.
After spates of recalls in the last year alone, including a massive, nationwide egg recall of nearly half a billion eggs and numerous deaths, the food safety overhaul seemed like an uncontroversial, obvious improvement to a broken system that fell far beyond the left-right paradigm of most modern politicking. It is apparently anything but, however, as Jon Stewart pointed out on the Daily Show last night.

... elaborate game of legislative ping-pong fell prey to yet another problem in the Senate. Senate Republicans have decided to block consideration of all bills until a final deal is struck on legislation to extend the Bush-era tax cuts and to punt this fiscal year’s appropriations bills down the field until early next year. As a result, Senate consideration of the food safety bill, once it arrives from the House, will likely have to wait until all the major unfinished legislative pieces are ready to move either as a coordinated set of actions or as an omnibus measure of some kind.
All of this has made the path for the Senate food safety bill to become law more complicated and a bit delayed, but hopefully will not jeopardize the bill becoming law after clearing all of these roadblocks and hurdles.

“Unconstitutional” food bill driven by Big Food lobby dollars

While over 200 organizations lobbied on the Food Safety Modernization Act (S.510), no one seemed to notice an unconstitutional section in the bill until after it passed on Tuesday. That day, Roll Call advised that the bill contained a provision, Sec. 107, allowing the Senate to raise revenues. This violates Article I, Section 7, of the U.S. Constitution, granting that power exclusively to the House. S.510 opponents now celebrate the House’s use of the “blue slip process” to return the bill to the Senate.
The Alliance for Natural Health figures that:
“The only possible ‘quick fix’ would be a unanimous consent agreement in the Senate to strike that revenue-raising provision from the bill—but Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) has already stated that he will oppose, so unanimity will be impossible.”
ANH believes it is unlikely that the Senate will return to a debate on S.510, given its full agenda. Its only other option is to “allow the bill to die at the end of this Congress [which means] a new Food Safety Bill will be introduced next year.”

The upshot of this is that this fight is not yet over. Unless the House makes an unprecedented exception to this blue slip rule, this legislation will apparently need to go back to the Senate floor for another vote.
This story was first reported by RollCall.com (http://www.rollcall.com/news/-20101...) which says, "The debacle could prove to be a major embarrassment for Senate Democrats, who sought Tuesday to make the relatively unknown bill a major political issue by sending out numerous news releases trumpeting its passage." According to Roll Call, "The blue slip could lead to one of two likely outcomes. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) could simply drop the issue and let the next session of Congress start from scratch..."

Just got your note and link to your fabulous Huffington Post Blog on the so-called "Safe Food" travesties! WHAT will these controllers think of next to choke the life out of us?? This blog needs to go all over the world, Leslie, not just the USA.
What can happen here can happen much more easily elsewhere.
We saw what happened to Europe with the CODEX and now my family can't even get simple vitamins without a physician's prescription, nor may I send them any from here without someone having to go to the Customs office with a physician's prescription to pick them up.
Great "fun" and double expense for a 90 year-old man who needs supplemental nutrition such as my poor Dad after a severe accident! Who thought something like that could happen to a free, intelligent, questioning people such as the Europeans?

The core, which will be the same all over the world, is chock-full of exciting, cutting-edge information about how to renew and regenerate our planet Earth locally and globally. And the last few pages in the back are for responsible, like-minded businesses to network and logo-list their services in a tasteful, inexpensive way. Hurrah!!
The other excitement was our First Annual SB SOL Festival (Sustainable, Organic, Local - SOL Food), organized by LOATree, Edible Santa Barbara and Alison and Heather Hartley's incredibly hard work and expertise. Thanks to them, Santa Barbara had a most satisfying, community-building, calm, soulful day in one of their parks amongst many booths by business which take sustainable living seriously. And our brand-new SOL Magazine, as we serendipitously call it for short, was right there with its inaugural complimentary issue smiling at everyone from its artful color covers to the great joy of visitors.
