Presidential Speech on Rejecting Fossil Fuels
President Obama has declared it a national emergency - fossil fuel use by America must be reduced.
Many serious and educated people have been saying it, and there is even some awareness in the public about the urgency, but action has been woefully inadequate.
But finally, to the amazement of all, an American President has said it on a live television address to Americans: "we must reduce our use of fossil fuels".
America really does use too much oil. The President reminded us that the USA has only 2% of the world's fossil fuels, but the USA uses 20% of the world's fossil fuels. America uses 20 million barrels of oil per day, most of it is imported.
The 100 year old monopoly of fossil fuels as the main source of energy for America has created environmental, health, social, and even financial problems. The environmental and health problems are highlighted by the Gulf of Mexico spill, global warming, and increasingly toxic conditions everywhere; the financial and social problems are less obvious, and much more complex, but very real nonetheless.
There is no doubt that the lack of political courage to tackle this problem comes from the fact that oil companies, and their related chemicals industry, have far too much political influence. The massive amount of money being made from fossil fuels is what is behind this political influence. Ironically, if the oil industry was paying the actual costs of using fossil fuels [environmental costs, military support costs, subsidies, etc.] they would not have so much political influence... but their influence has stifled effective regulations by government.
President Obama also addressed this corruption in this speech. He said he is replacing the MMR bosses who were "too cozy with the oil industry". No previous American President has had the courage to do anything like that - Obama knows that he may not get any financial support for his re-election in 2012 from the fossil fuels industry because of what he has said today.
President Obama has made an historic and revolutionary speech today. I hope Americans support him - the whole world will be much better off if this speech comes to fruition.
