Enjoyed viewing "Setting History Free":

and then thought about this from the perspective of Self-Knowledge ...
"Know thyself!" is "...a knowledge of the whole being of man and the position he occupies in the Universe"
http://wn.rsarchive.org/Lectures/ManHiero/19200409a01.html
This "... knowledge of Man has to a very great extent been lost in modern times. ... from the middle of the fifteenth century, man's earlier concrete relation to the world has been growing more and more abstract. ...
Today man takes no account whatever of this concrete understanding of the dimensions; hence he cannot define his position in the great cosmic process. He does not know how he stands in it, nor that he is as it were a part and member of it. Steps will have now to be taken whereby man can obtain a knowledge of Man, a self-knowledge, and so a knowledge of how he is placed in the Universe. "
The idea of looking to history without knowing ourselves yet hoping that history will help us know ourselves does seem convoluted to me now! But "Setting History Free" seems to offer some "bread crumbs" on the way to "knowing who we are". I'm just not sure that we will find our way "home" by following those bread crumbs.
