Procter & Gamble responds to diaper investigation
Updated: May 07, 2010 1:25 PM
Indianapolis - More complaints about Pampers New Dry Max Diapers continue to roll in as the Consumer Product Safety Commission investigates. Local mothers shared their concerns with Eyewitness News, and we also went to Cincinnati Friday to talk with manufacturer Procter & Gamble.
Lori Taylor is a stay at home mother to sons Joe and Mac. She used free samples of Pampers Dry Max diapers and says in days, both boys developed what she calls bad cases of diaper rash
"It had parts that were really red but it had parts of what a yeast rash looks like - red dots," she said.
Taylor called her pediatrician, got online and then found a community with a similar story.
"Thousands of pages came up with other parents having the same problem," said Taylor.
There is a Facebook group with more than 4,300 members. They share pictures, and the belief that a rash that looks like a burn is caused by the Dry Max technology launched in March. The site also encourages caregivers to report to the Consumer Product Commission which confirms it is investing more than a dozen complaints.
"We are taking these complaints very seriously," said Jodi Allen, vice president of North America Baby Care for Procter & Gamble."We want to get to the bottom of this and we are convinced that when the CPSC is able to do their research they will determine this product is 100 percent safe."
Those with concerns are taking on corporate America.
"I would like to think that they will recognize and own up to the problem but it's a big company and I am just a mom in central Indiana," said Taylor. "Who knows if they are taking my situation as seriously as I would like them to take it?"
"What we are seeing in the social media is misinformation. There are accusations of chemical burn. There has not been one case of chemical burn that has been brought to our attention. We have invited parents to call us. We have asked them. We have pleaded on our Facebook page, on other Facebook pages, please call us and there has not been one case of a parent who has come forward," said Allen.
Manufacturer Procter & Gamble says the new diapers were tested on 20,000 babies over five years and found no increase incidence of diaper rash.
They showed us two containers. One represents what used to be in the diapers - cotton balls representing pulp that was mixed with absorbing gel. Dry max has the the same amount of gel but no pulp, making it thinner, which means less bulk on your baby and in landfills.
Could that concentration difference be an issue?
"There is no chemical explanation. There is no anecdotal information that indicates taking that pulp out makes any difference. There is no reason to believe the removal of that pulp is any kind of skin irritant," said Allen.
Still, Allen added, "The challenge of social media is that it's hard for us to get the right information and so we see a lot misinformation being shared."
Still, Lori Taylor shares the sentiment common on the Facebook page about the Dry Max diapers: "They need to go back to the old diapers. They were good, and I don't know why they changed it.
