An Open Letter to Barack Obama

Dear Barack,

I need to tell you that my heart and spirit have in part been
broken by you. I need to tell you also that I am wearing right now
The Change Can Happen T-shirt that was sent in the mail
because I gave some money to get you elected.

I met a friend of yours, Jerome Ringo, here a San DIego State
University the other day. He helped me understand some of the
things you are up against. I feel that you are being fair when
you said, "Show me the movement. Make me do It!" in regard
to giving you the backing, and a large movement that will be
as powerful as the other lobbyists who have so much
influence in Washington. I am involved in showing you
the movement as I write this.

Jerome was the keynote speaker at
our Greenfest week long activities. Our celebration of so many things
that are good in our world continues Saturday and Sunday
when SDSU will be hosting the 2010 Cultivating Food Justice Conference
that begins with reg at 8 AM. Saturday. I want to personally invite you
to attend our 2011 Conference. I know that George Bush and Bill Clinton,
two of the former presidents, that have spend some hours awake
in the Oval Office are going to be the keynote speakers at this
year's BIO Conference, The Biotechnology Industry Organization
annual meeting, so I thought it might be nice for you to come out
West to our conference next year, to sort of show everybody here
in my neigborhood that our Presidents can show up in all kinds
of places.

It is a great gift to tell you that I have love in my heart for you.
So do a lot of my friends.

I want to thank you for asking your wife to take up the issue
of helping our kids eat better. I love her "Let's Move!" initiative
that she launched on Tax Day April 15, a few miles from my home
that I share with others, some hummingbirds and beet plants.

I know we are going to get out of our economic predicament
and get rooted again on a sound course. Jerome has many good
ideas. I am going to help him understand a few things about
now nature works.

I once had Robert Muller,
then the Undersecretary General of the U.N. give me a Peace Medal
for the work I would do in my life. I believe you too got that
Peace Medal for the work that History will record that you did
in your life.

Yesterday I was walking on campus here at San DIego State.
I was here for the Greenfest and to spend time with our mutual
friend Jerome, who is one of the most blessed gifts
to the environment that I know.

I have to run now...Jerome is speaking in less than an hour.

I will continue this letter later.

I am sending along a few gifts to you and Michelle.

I am sending you two of my love poems, Words That Men Need
To Know and Women Want To Hear. You have a very special wife.
Please read these poems to her.

She is very wise and a good mother for your kids and all kids
in our nation.

I want to thank Michelle for coming to the New Root Gommunity Garden
on April 15. I want to thank her for hugging a Somali gardener that
felt dispossessed from her homeland and now has a place to
farm again here.

I am reminded of the Statue of Liberty as I write this and the words
about different kinds of folks being welcomes to our shores, One
Beet. Many Pulses, so to speak.

I am reminded of the words of Thomas Jefferson, who was an eminent
gardener of the American Dream, and the spirit of another friend of
mine, Ben Franklin. It was one of Ben's offspring who was president
of the AAAS, our esteemed Science Organization.

I like very much that you too see that through Technology and Science
we can get ourselves out of our present predictament. I welcome
being invited to the White House for some chats we can have.
I want to read some of my love poems to you, and maybe attend
the seder. I would also like to ask you to make peace with the beet.

We can negotiate on this.

I have a friend I will bring with me called Keep The Beet Media
Star, The World's First Talking Beet Plant.

She is relieved that you do not like to eat beets.

Her message is Keep The Beet. Repot a fully grown beet
that you get from a local, organic farmer in some great potting
soil, the best from the ocean and forest. Water your beet.
Eat the Greens.

If you do this, and we have the kids do this, we will have an endless supply
of greens to eat. You can eat a a little bit raw, or maybe have Sam Kass,
your chef, figure out how to steam them in a way that go well with
some of the Italian foods you like.

I am not asking too much of you.

I am looking forward to you speaking at San Diego State. We have
a great baasketball arena with a Native American name on it now.
We also have a history of a couple good athletes here, one who
was an ally of mine, Marshall Faulk. I use to bring him aloe vera
when he would get bruised up once or twice.

So dear Barack, I send you blessings and care.
May the wisdom of more than 8000 years of Nature's Original
Technology continue to shine upon your tummy as you eat
local and organic from your backyard. Through Science--the science
of taking time to observe lady bugs, and celebrate bees; through
taking time to invest in the Bank of Compost, and enrich the true
wealth of America, our fertile soil, you and I will go down
in history as having walking here on earth in a good way.

Let us have a beer together before too long.
I know Mother Earth and all her Angels will resonate with that.

In friendship, I remain,
Your Enchanted Gardener,
Leslie
