Earth Day
April 22, 2010
San Diego State University
One of the Nation's Top Green
inside and outside Campuses
in San Diego that likes to
call itself the Nation's Finest City.
Jerome Ringo, the inspired environmentalist
and man of color who sits on the nation's leading
environmental councils, and calls the likes
of Barack Obama his personal ally,
had a run in with Keep the Beet Media Star,
The World's First Talking Beet plant,
on Earth Day 2010.
That was the destined day the two meet
and combined forces to reshape not only
reshape what will become the Green History
of San Diego State University, the the
fate of beets growing at the White House.
The President, who made headlines
when he said that he hated to eat beets,
brought a moment of comfort to
Keep the Beet Media Star, on her
way to Hollywood to be a cartoon character
that teaches children how to once again
regain their beat with nature through
getting a local, organic beet from a farmer,
repotting that beet in a pot of fine soil,
and then continuing to grow and harvest
the beet greens.
"Go Green! Eat the Greens!" is Keep the
Beet's Motto. An environmentalist at heart,
the noted Root "roots" for some of the world's
most difficult problems, including cleaning
up the Polluted Gyres where toxic plastic
now collects in beds the size of Texas.
In their first meeting at SDSU,
Keep The Beet told Ringo about her
project called "The Great Earth Cleanup"
that begins with education the public
to use the Sugar Cane Bagasse by-products
who recommends as an alternative to
styrofoam.
It is styrofoam, says the acclaimed
Czarina of Foods, that ends up as nurdles--
tiny broken to bits pieces--that fish and sea life
eat. The nurdles not only harm sealife, but
put contaminate the people who eat the
fish.
Ringo, who has entered the environmental
movement to balance the personal debt he
owned to the poor for the harm he may have
caused when he worked for a large petrochemical
company, pointed out a crime that Keep The Beet
has been talking about for years.
That crime Ringo called "Environmental Racism."
He has to do with the habit that many have in
our nation of living in one area of town and then
sending their fecal materials to to processing
plants where the poor live.
In one city he knew, each time it rained
the fecal material came out of pipes into the river.
The big fish, he said, would then eat the raw
human waste, that was eating by the local
fishermen, who then were harmed by what they ate.
Keep The Beet toke Ringo's message to heart
and felt kinship. She said that on Earth Day,
she would recommend that the two Go Green
giants, both from ethnic minorities--become
friends. "Ringo and Keep The Beet," said
the prophetic root. I can see us both
on T.V. together in a cartoon classic, she said.

"SHOW ME THE MOVEMENT! MAKE ME DO IT!"
--PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA
Michael Pollan of "Food inc" and his latest
book 'Food Rules" told a story last year
about a friend of his who had dinner with
the president. After a conversation
about the the Food Sustainability local
organic movement, The President said
he did not sense that the movement
was ready for the Barack Obama to make waves.
He said then, "Show me the Movement! Make
me do it!" Then he turned to Michelle was
reported to have said, "This is your Issue, Baby!"
Michelle Obama, one year later, has profoundly
taking up the issue. Not only making international
history with the White House Organic Garden,
April 15, on Tax Day, she choose the state of the
art International Rescue Committee New Roots Community
Garden, only a 15 minute ride from SDSU,
as the place to launch her "Let's Move" national
mandate that aims to improve children's health.
The connection between digging in the soil
and the health of kids will increasingly be made
over the next year, and more and more
of us take up the trowel and plant beets and trees
as a way of repairing our relationship not only
to the environment, but to our health.

BARACK OBAMA ON BEETS AND THE HIGH COST
OF ARUGULA SOLD AT WHOLE FOODS MARKET
This story was written before
the Obamas took the White House
and planted the White House Organic Garden,
sans beets. Keep the Beet wants the Obamas
to join her Keep the Beet Program.
Plant a beet in a pot. Keep The Beet.
Eat the Greens. You can even grow arugula
around the beet, she said.

CHICAGO —
Former President George H.W. Bush famously disliked broccoli. His son, the outgoing president, is a Texas meat-eater. President-elect Barack Obama loves chili and shuns beets.
Obama's aversion to beets aside - "I always avoid eating them," he says - the new first family are foodies with a wide-ranging palate. They have hankerings for Mexican food, enjoy hand-crafted pastas and their kids dig fried chicken and macaroni and cheese.
--
But on the campaign trail, he proved himself a picky and healthy eater with an aide-assisted diet managed to prevent Obama from packing on the presidential pounds.
At campaign stops, his staff would urge him to sample the corn dogs, hamburgers and other fattening fare. Obama would take a bite, but then the food would usually be whisked away. At diners and pubs, he generally ordered his food to go - whitefish and latkes at one place, cheeseburgers or chicken at another.
--
Obama's familiarity with finer foods got him in a bit of trouble during the presidential campaign. He was talking to Iowa farmers to show he understood their plight when he mentioned the high cost of a boutique salad green.
"Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?" Obama said, referring to a high-end food chain loaded with organic products. "I mean, they're charging a lot of money for this stuff."
--
The Obama daughters, 10-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha, have a few favorites of their own. When they stay over at close family friend Yvonne Davila's house they often request her fried chicken and macaroni and cheese.
Another family friend, Kaye "Mama Kaye" Wilson, said Malia is a fan of her lemon meringue pie and Sasha enjoys her cobbler.
Pie made its way into Obama's stump speech late in the campaign when he began telling an anecdote about stopping at an Ohio diner and talking to the owner about hard economic times while enjoying a slice of coconut cream pie.

PLANTING TREES TO EFFECT CLIMATE?
Yes or No.
Here is a no:

MORE,
THIS IS PART OF THE ISSUE
Can planting trees really give you a clear carbon conscience?
Land Rover, British Gas and Coldplay are all doing it, but experts warn that the benefits of carbon offsetting may be overstated
Across the world, thousands of projects aim to cut carbon emissions through reduced energy use or conversion to renewable sources. The notional "carbon credits" such projects generate can be sold, and there is big money to be made: HSBC recently paid £420,000 to buy enough credits to offset just three months of its carbon emissions.
Whether driven by a desire to save the planet or a sense that "going green" is a powerful marketing tool, carbon offsets are everywhere. Need to book a British Airways flight to New York? Want to buy a new Range Rover or petrol from a BP garage? Simply click on the web link, do the sums and pay £20 or so to neutralise your contribution to global warming.
