FROM THE COMMENTS

Ok, its really late where I am, so I'll make this brief.

I am a Whole Foods employee. I am not speaking for the company, just myself and from my experience. I did not watch the video, but this immediately struck me as a hit-piece against Whole Foods by the other competitors and/or miserable people. Before everyone goes jumping on the Hate-Whole-Foods-bandwagon, I'd like to ask a few questions.

Do you think ALL of our 365 organic brand products come from China?
I'm guessing, and assuming, maybe there's a few. I'd be willing to put down money that if enough people make a stink and bring it to the right person's attention, this sillyness could be fixed.

Do you know there's a difference between "365 brand" items and "Locally Grown" products?
Usually they are marked as "365 Organic or All Natural" or "Locally Grown".
Just because you buy "Organic" doesn't mean you are buying "Local".

Do you think other grocery stores work with and support local farming and vendors like Whole Foods?

Do you think other grocery stores give back to the community as much as we do?

Care about the environment as much as we do?

Whoever said something about all the petrol burned to ship those goods here.. Look around you, I can GUARANTEE there's at least 10 things in your room that's made in China.

I think everyone needs to take a chill pill and understand that Whole Foods isn't perfect, but we are trying. We're definitely not the bad-guy!

Just my 2cents, PEACES!

HERE IS ANOTHER FROM ABC NEWS
from 2008 REGARDING GINGER RECALL

http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0808/541588.html

THIS IS ONE OF THE COMMENTS UNDER THE YOUTUBE

this is just more xenophobic fearmongering (towards an entire nation that has 4 times our population) because a company is buying their food from a country that is outproducing us. so whole foods tries to save the consumer money by going cheap. the american propaganda machine (i.e. mainstream media) is just trying to dissuade us from the issues that actually matter to us,

Whole Foods travels around the world
to get the foods that it labels organic.

If you knew that Whole Foods actually traveled
to this farm, would you feel differently about it?

This would be a great story to pursue,
and really get to the bottom.

I like the other comment here that points out
that ABC is owned by Disney.\

JOHN STOSSEL CONTROVERSY of 2000

http://www.lewrockwell.com/mcelroy/mcelroy21.html

http://www.dontwastearizona.org/stossel.html

ABC 20/20's John Stossel Admits Fraud

ABC to Apologize for "20/20" Report
So much for reporter John Stossel's unconventional wisdom.

ABC News has announced it will issue a rare mea culpa on Friday's edition of for a fraudulent on-air report by Stossel on the safety of organic foods.

In his "Give Me a Break" segment first aired February 8 and repeated July 7, Stossel asserted organic foods contain more pesticide residue than conventional supermarket foods, and are less safe to eat.

Stossel said his claims were based on tests commissioned by ABC News that revealed "by a small margin, more of the organic produce was contaminated [by E. Coli bacteria] than the conventional stuff." He then concluded by saying that, although the food supply is "pretty safe," organic foods may be "no better and maybe worse" for consumers trying to eat healthy.

Soon after the report first aired, the Washington, D.C., based Environmental Working Group questioned the validity of the story. The group launched its own investigation (a report titled "Give Us a Fake"), which accused the network of faking pesticide tests and debunked each of Stossel's claims.

In a July 31 letter to Westin, EWG President Kenneth Cook wrote: "I am writing to inform you or our conclusion that ABC News does not possess, and has never possessed, the test results Mr. Stossel reported. The reason is simple: we have confirmed with the experts ABC hired for its organic food story that the pesticide test results in question do not exist because no such laboratory tests were ever conducted for ABC News;"

Stossel told the group through his assistant that he would not respond "in any fashion" to their accusations. That is, until ABC announced that Stossel himself will apologize on Friday's broadcast for his mistake, acknowledging that E. Coli tests were never really conducted. While Cook and company has called on ABC News to fire Stossel for his "remarkable breach of journalistic ethics and conduct," an analyst speaking for Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting believes he'll most likely stay on the job.

"He'll be disciplined but not in any severe way," said FAIR analyst Peter Hart. "I think the most troubling thing is that EWG released the information in February and ABC was less than interested in looking into it. It's aired twice and only now are they looking at the error. However, we'd rather ABC look at his overall record."

Stossel's been in another recent toxic broiler over a "20/20" report that raised doubts about the real-life Erin Brockovich's research into Chromium 6, which helped a small California desert town win a whopping $330 million settlement against utility Pacific Gas & Electric. Brockovich, whose life story became the basis for the hit Julia Roberts film Erin Brockovich, said Stossel's report was not grounded in fact.

announced in September 2009 that Stossel would be leaving ABC News and joining Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network.[6] He currently hosts a weekly one-hour show, Stossel and appears weekly on The O'Reilly Factor.

John Stossel, widely viewed as an apologist and cheerleader for big industry in many fields, is presently working on a series on genetic engineering. His producer has put out the word that they want someone "fiery" to represent the anti-genetic engineering side. "You know what that means," sighs Margulis of Greenpeace. "They want someone who is going to look like they are out of control."

Stossel, you may recall, is the reporter recently caught deliberately misleading Americans about organic foods. My husband, Steve Wilson, worked alongside Stossel at a CBS-owned station in New York in the late '70s when Stossel was a consumer crusader and champion for the underdog. When they saw each other again a few years ago, Steve asked Stossel about the dramatic change in his reporting--how he went from skeptic to corporate cheerleader, someone who now questions the legitimacy of people who challenge big corporations and the status quo. Stossel explained that when he began making "real" money--he now enjoys a seven-figure income at ABC--"I started to see things much differently."

FOOD LABELING ARTICLE

All types of foods and organisms have been genetically engineered: corn, cotton, tomatoes, soybeans, sugarbeets, oilseed rape, maize, salmon, pigs, cows, and the list goes on. With about 6 billion people eating everyday, we need every reasonable tool known to man to assure adequate nutrition for Earth's residents. GM foods, property utilized, can help meet these needs in a number of ways: pest resistance, herbicide tolerance, disease resistance, cold tolerance, drought tolerance and salinity toleranc, among others. Many countries are growing GM crops: U.S., Canada, China, Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Mexico, Romania, South Africa, Spain and Uruguay. Interestingly, according the USDA approximately 54% of all soybeans cultivated in the U.S. in 2000 were genetically-modified. In the U.S., three government agencies have jurisdiction over GM foods: EPA evaluates GM plants for environmental safety, the USDA evaluates whether the plant is safe to grow, and the FDA evaluates whether the plant is safe to eat. Mandatory food labeling is also a complex issue. The FDA's current position on food labeling is govered by the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, which is only concerned with food additives, not whole foods or food products that are considered GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe). The FDA contends that GM foods are substantially equivalent to non-GM foods, and therefore not subject to more stringent labeling. If all GM foods and food products are to be labeled, Congress must enact sweeping changes in the existing food lableling policy. The Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act (HR 2916) is probably a good place to start for food labeling.

TRUTH IN LABELING CAMPAIGN

http://www.naturalingredient.org/naturalingredients.htm

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/scitech/DailyNews/poll010619.html

What's at Issue

This poll, conducted for ABCNEWS.com by telephone among a random sample of adults across the country, described genetic engineering as a process by which "scientists can change the genes in some food crops and farm animals to make them grow faster or bigger and be more resistant to bugs, weeds and disease." Organic foods were described as raised "without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers or feed additives."

Genetic modification of foods has been in development since the 1980s, inciting heated argument pro and con. A variety of genetically modified crops has been approved by the FDA for general use, and it's reviewing an application to market genetically modified fish.

The FDA has said labeling isn't necessary because there's no evidence genetic engineering changes a food's quality, safety, "or any other attribute." In a report late last year, the American Medical Association also said there was "no scientific justification for special labeling of genetically modified foods, as a class."

Starlink, a genetically modified corn that is approved for use in animal feed but not for human consumption, made its way into human foods last year. The government reported last week that Starlink did not cause allergic reactions in people who reported health problems after eating it.

___

Nearly everyone, moreover — 93 percent — says the federal government should require labels on food saying whether it's been genetically modified, or "bio-engineered" (this poll used both phrases). Such near-unanimity in public opinion is rare.

___

Activist groups and a smaller percentage of consumers in the United States are now expressing similar concerns. These concerns about GM foods contrast with the widespread acceptance and use of many recombinant products in health care (e.g., human insulin and growth hormone, erythropoietin, hepatitis B vaccine, tissue plasminogen activator, interferons, factor VIII, antihemophiliac factor, etc).15

SUPPORT FOR GMO FOODS

http://www.csa.com/discoveryguides/gmfood/overview.php

n summary, genetically modified foods may be the future of feeding the world's developing countries with a promising future of agricultural commodities around the world. Alternatively, it may be the path to detrimental outcomes and new problems to other crops, plant life, and the sale of food products all over the world. It might be too soon to estimate the effects of GMOs. The overriding issue with GMOs is consumer choice and preference. Appropriate education and consumer awareness are essential to the realm and outlook of biotechnology. It will be up to consumers around the world whether the future of GMOs will survive or fail in the world marketplace.

ABC DID THREE STORIES on ORGANIC

I-Team Investigates: Pesticide-laced Organic Foods Follow Up
The I-Team continues their investigation on pesticide-laced organic food products.

text size: A | A | A I-Team Investigates: Pesticide-laced Organic Foods Follow Upposted 08/05/08 5:23 pm

ANCHOR:

AN ABC 7 "I-TEAM INVESTIGATION" HAS DISCOVERED A POPULAR ORGANIC FOOD PRODUCT CONTAMINATED WITH A TOXIC PESTICIDE. THAT FINDING HAS PROMPTED WHOLE FOODS MARKET TO PULL THE PRODUCT FROM ITS SHELVES! THE I-TEAM'S ROBERTA BASKIN IS HERE WITH THE LATEST... ROBERTA?

ROBERTA BASKIN:

OUR DISCOVERY COMES BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN ASKING SERIOUS QUESTIONS ABOUT CERTIFIED ORGANIC LABELLING. HOW CAN CONSUMERS BE ASSURED FOOD GROWN HALF A WORLD AWAY IS TRULY ORGANIC? HERE'S WHAT WE FOUND.

STORY:

Track 1: ORGANIC means "free of harmful pesticides." Much of Whole Foods ORGANIC "365" products ARE locally grown. But an internal document we obtained shows Whole Foods obtains a long list of organic products from OTHER countries - dozens from CHINA.

SOT #3/15.40.53 R: Would you expect that this comes all the way from China?

L: No. There's no way of telling where it comes from."

Track 2: When we discovered Whole Foods putting its organic label on products from China, we sent some to a certified laboratory. The frozen vegetables came back "pesticide free." But the powdered ginger was contaminated with a toxic pesticide called Aldicarb.

Lynn Goldman: "It would definitely fail the organic standard. It would also fail the regular standard for ginger."

Track 3: Dr. Lynn Goldman is a leading authority on toxic substances.
(Font: Johns Hopkins University's School of Public Health)

SOT #2 Roberta Baskin: "There is no allowable level of Aldicarb in ginger?

Goldman: "Ginger with Aldicarb is not legal food."

Track 4: In fact, the California Health Department warned consumers that this pesticide can cause nausea, headache and blurred vision….even at low levels.

Track 5: We told Whole Foods of our findings and this week they pulled their store brand ginger off shelves nationwide.

Wittenberg: "Oh, absolutely, if there's ever a question of a product we pull it right away."

Track 5A: Margaret Wittenberg is vice president for quality standards.

SOT Wittenberg, "That really is a concern for us. We really appreciate you sharing the test results with us."

Track 8: So how did the contaminated ginger slip through? Well... Whole Foods relies on a company called Quality Assurance International to certify its ginger. But QAI relies on two other certifiers to do the work in China.

Wittenberg: "This is a very unusual fluke, unusual situation. We're looking forward to seeing what the USDA National Organic Program has to say when they do their full blown investigation of this."

ROBERTA BASKIN IN STUDIO:

AND SO ARE WE. THE USDA IS CONDUCTING AN AUDIT OF MORE THAN 30 ORGANIC CERTIFIERS AND THOSE RESULTS WILL BE RELEASED THE FIRST WEEK IN AUGUST.

THERE WERE TWO OTHER CHANGES BY WHOLE FOODS: The California Blend Vegetables grown in China will be relabeled as "California Style" to prevent misleading shoppers.

AND WHEN THIS GINGER COMES BACK ON THE SHELF IT WILL ALSO BE LABELED AS GROWN IN CHINA. ALSO, WHOLE FOODS REVEALED ITS OWN TESTS HAVE ALSO FOUND PESTICIDES IN THE GINGER.

Are the Dates intentionally left off of stories
to make them seem current?????
This is interesting how a story once publlished
becomes eternally alive, able to pot up at another
time for someone looking.

That is why I put the date and time on every story I wrote
on the Plant Your Dream Blog.

When quoting my stories or research,
contact me first. Always include the source.
Always include the date. Always look for later stories
by following the tags, the keywords. Later stories
may be the opposite information to what I published earlier.

Follow the trail! Be a good researcher.
Be careful before you quote me.

Are you quoting a satire?
Are you quoting Keep the Beet Media Star?
Attribute quotes to the source on my blog.
There are more than one voice speaking here.
Is it Leslie? Is it Keep the beet? Is it Your Enchanted Gardener?
Is a a source quoted with a link to a web site?

Be careful! Once a story goes on the web,
it is difficult to get it off.
