"Rayne" Comes to San Diego!!!!! Rayne Pegg of the USDA was a keynote speaker at the 2010 California Small Farms Conference.
Date: 3/2/2010 7:58:47 AM ( 14 y ago)
Rayne Pegg (R) of the USDA brought
sincere care and concern to hurting farmers
at the recent California 2010 Small Farm Conference.
May all small farmers have a great, great year
and rejoice in our community of support.
Other I.D. will follow...

Rayne Pegg of the USDA
was a keynote speaker at the 2010
California Small Farms Conference
February 28, March 1 & 2 at the
Del Mar Marriot.
We are in a drought condition here is San Diego.
Rayne brought a deep sense of listenen
and was like healing rain for our area.
She is a gifted public servant.
She stood in from Kathleen Merrigan,
who helped Sec of Ag Tom Villsack come up with
the Know Your Farmer. Know Your Food Program.
Rayne was a fill-in for Kathleen at the last minute
due to scheduling issues. She did a wonderful job!
Kathleen is a voice for organic agriculture at the USDA.
There is a bill that goes before the Supreme Court March 3
that concerns me very much. The USDA 1500 page
report says that GMO Ag, conventional Ag, and Organic
should co-exist.
I feel for them to co-exist will need a lot more research
and development. I feel it is premature to allow my friends
at Monsanto to be deregulated at this time.
More work is needed.
The evidence that I know suggests that when
GMO drift touched organic fields, the organic fields are
no longer organic. Organic is based on a philosophy
of building up the soil.
I am asking for a healthy dialogue between Science,
Ethics, and Food. I feel biotechnology has helped many people,
and personally saved the life of one of my dearest of friends.
I feel we just need to deeply look at how to apply it.
The intent of medicine is to apply the least possible intervention.
I made a new ally at the California Small Farm Conference
from Crows Pass organic farms. I will get the I.D.'s soon.
I, as my new friend, are not into bashing any kind of farmer.
There are people in Africa who are really hurting.
So let's talk and work together as A.G. Kawamura,
the Sec of Ag of California says. We all want a strong
agriculture for our nation and the world.

Dr. Robert T. Fraley, Ph.D., the Father of
Agricultural Biotenchnololgy, Leslie, and Tami Craig
Schilling, head of Public Affairs for the Monsanto
company met at the recent American Association
for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) 2010 Conference
March 18-22, 2010 at the San Diego Cpnvention Center.
Getting to know each other is a beginning stage of
dialogue, I believe.
The idea for a Dialogue was inspired when I met
Dr. Robert T. Fraley. There is a lot of tension now between
GMO and Organic Lovers that I feel is not helping get to the
basic issues that need to be discussed.
Dr. Fraley said he liked where I was coming from.
"Let's close the gap," he wrote to me in a note.
We planted Seeds toward that intention in
a small sugar cane compost Friendly pot,
a gift from Anthony Russo, of the Biosmart Company,
and a Beet Keeper Sponsor. There are 30 or more
Plant Your Dream Blogs on the recent AAAS meeting
in San Diego.
The Beet Keepers function as a non-profit and aim
to help each person regain their beat with Nature through
planting beet seeds or repotting a fully growing beet
in a pot.
Here is a description of the KEEP The BEET project.

From the BROOK LARIOS story
in the EXAMINER, June 3, 09
“I’m playing with the story of an actual beet
that decided she was tired of just sitting
in the ground, watching the human race
become more and more fragmented,
and the beet, whose name is Keep the Beet,
decided to speak up,” said Goldman,
also known to friends as The Enchanted Gardener.
Keep the Beet encourages people to make friends
with a local, organic farmer; purchase the largest beet
they can find and repot it, keeping it alive
as it sprouts billowing, edible green leaves.
Leslie with the Seeds of Change staff
at Sage Mountain Farm in 2009.
Leslie loves local, organic food, and moves more
healthy dialogue. He has friends in every branch
of agriculture. He was given a U..N. Peace Medal in
1984 for the work he would do in his life.
As a blogger, he attended the 2008 BIO
Biotenchnology Industry Organizaion Conference
in San Diego, and most recently the Associaition
for the Advancement of Science Conference.
"We all need to be open to each other. We
are in agriculture because we love food
and want to feed the world. I make friends
where ever I go. Leslie inspired the book
"The Ultimate Gardener. The book is dedicated to him.
Charlie Nardozzi, a consultant to Michelle Obama
on the White House Organic Garden Project
is listed as the author of that book.
Another favorite book of his is
"Mendel in the Kitchen," by incoming
AAAS president Dr. Nina Federoff.
The book describes a scientists support
for GMO Foods. It is a great takeoff point
of looking at the issues I want to discuss
in our Dialogue on Science, Ethiics, and Food
that is beginning here on the Plant Your Dream Blog.
