What?? A good old fashioned guacamole cook-off.
The public is invited to come and sample the guacamole and vote for their favorite teams. Admission is $5.00 and includes tortilla chips provided by Mission Foods and lots of fun. The top 3 teams in each division, based on the public vote will mix up a final batch to be judged by celebrity judges from law enforcement, the media and the community.
Entertainment will be provided by the Chula Vista High School Mariachi Band.
Retired San Diego Police Officer Matt Weathersby came up with this unique fundraising idea as a way of supporting local charities. This year’s charity is SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes. Over the past six years, the Guacamole Bowl, co-sponsored by San Diego Park & Recreation-Therapeutic Recreation Services, has raised over $35,000 to support local programs for athletes with developmental disabilities.
According to Weathersby, over 2,000 pounds of fresh avocados donated by Calavo Growers, Inc. will be used by the various teams along with lots of onions, tomatoes, cilantro and jalapenos, provided by Jordano’s, to the competing teams. Matt added, “If you like good guacamole, and lots of it, then Balboa Park is the place to be”.
