at HAMILTON HIGH SCHOOL
FEBRUARY 17, 2010





Students at Ms. EVA BECKER's Science class
prepared prepared to plant beet seeds yesterday.
My niece Eva introduced me as "Uncle Leslie"
before I introduced the BEET THE BEET MEDIA STAR
plant your dream project to two of Eva's Tenth Grade
classes February 17. I also gave a pep talk to another
class. They were learning about cell division.

I am going to suggest new ways to enliving Eva's
Science teachers. We visited the new site for the
food growing garden and took photos.

It was a wonderful day.

Eva is one of the top science teachers at Hamilton High
School and making a significant contribution in the lives
of her students. She has outstanding Rapport.

KEEP THE BEET was well received.
We planted more than ten Seed Dreams.

I met with great enthusiasm and will return to the classroom.

James C. Greenwood, President & Ceo of BIO Biotechnology Industry Organization,
and Pete Leddy, were both at the podium Monday night.

The Biotechnology Institute's 2008 Biotechnology Education Banquet Program,
brought together a room full of enthusiastic science teachers and students,
June 16 at the Downtown Marriot. Greenwood expressed his Seed Dream
that Biotech will continue to help transform our world improving many areas of our
daily lives.

Leddy, of Invitrogen, a local San Diego Corporation, is instrumental in supporting
BioTech Education in the schools.

One of biotechnology’s leading advocates will hold a presentation at the 176th annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which will start Thursday at the San Diego Convention Center and other venues. About 8,000 people from more than 50 countries are expected for the five-day affair, making it the largest general-science conference in the nation.

“We are just scratching the surface of the science that is now being applied to improve crops,” said Robert Fraley, chief technology officer for Monsanto Co., an agricultural giant based in St. Louis. “I think we will see tremendous gains in yields and profitability for farmers, and health and nutrition for consumers.”

As the leader of Monsanto’s Plant Molecular Biology group in the 1980s, Fraley’s early research and his vision of the future of agricultural biotechnology convinced executives that biological solutions could meet the world’s expanding food needs with a lower environmental impact. Because of his work, crops improved to reduce disease and chemical usage are grown by 12 million farmers on more than 282 million acres in twenty-three countries worldwide. The award will be presented at the 2009 BIO International Convention in Atlanta at a plenary luncheon on Tuesday, May 19.

Sustainable Solutions for Doubling Crop Productivity by 2030

Dr. Fraley oversees Monsanto's integrated crop and seed agribusiness technology and research with facilities in most world areas. He has been involved in agricultural biotechnology since the early eighties and has been with Monsanto for 25 years. His educational background includes a fellowship from the University of California, San Francisco, and a Ph.D. degree in microbiology and biochemistry from the University of Illinois. Dr. Fraley has contributed to years of agricultural development through a number of significant activities, including authoring more than 100 publications and patent applications relating to technical advances in agricultural biotechnology. He received the National Medal of Technology from President Clinton in 1999.

Monsanto is seeking regulatory approval for what may be the first genetically engineered crops developed directly for the consumer. The company’s scientists in California have manipulated the soybean genome to produce omega-3 fatty acids, the kind that nutritionists tout as heart-healthy.

It could be pivotal in generating public acceptance of biotech, or “transgenic,” crops. To date, farmers and seed companies have reaped benefits from biotechnology while consumers have been left to wonder what’s in it for them and whether genetic engineering has really made the world a better place.
