The World's First Talking Beeet Plant came agreed that
potatoes are one of the highest foods high in pesticides.

Jewish youth everywhere are who do not plan to
give up their latka fix, a traditional friend food,
served around the eight days of Chanukah,
are calling on Rabbi's everywhere--in every demonination--
to support the drive to plant local organic potatoes.

According to KEEP The BEET, who is featured
regularly in the SPACE OF LOVE magazine,
poatotes will grow in wine barrels cut in half other large
size container gardens.

Potatoes come in many varieties, shapes, and colors.
For best results, plant a variety of poatoes to keep
the rare breeds alive., sez the noted beet.

Purpl potatoes are of course my favorite.
Being a beet, I learn toward a lovefor red to purplc
roots, although orange beets and stripped beets are
also a favoirte of mine, but that's another story,
said the world famous beet.

Pesticides were found on 79 percent of the potatoes tested.
There were 29 pesticides found on potatoes:
2 4-d, Acephate, Aldicarb, Captan, Carbofuran, Chlorpropham, DDT, Demeton, Diazinon, Dicloran, Dieldrin, Dimethoate, Diphenylamine (DPA), Disulfoton, Endosulfans, Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), Iprodione, Linuron, Metalaxyl, Methamidophos, Metribuzin, O-Phenylphenol, Pentachlorobenzene (PCB), Phorate, Phosphamidon, Quintozene (PCNB), Tecnazene, Thiabendazole, Trifluralin

The three pesticides found most often on potatoes were
Chlorpropham, Thiabendazole, and Endosulfans.

What about washing?

Washing will not change the rank of the fruits and vegetables in the Guide. That's because nearly all of the data used to create these lists comes from the USDA Pesticide Data Program (PDP) where the foods are washed and prepared for normal consumption prior to testing for pesticides (apples are washed and cored, bananas are peeled, etc.).

While washing fresh produce may help reduce pesticide residues, it clearly does not eliminate them. Nonetheless, produce should be washed before it is eaten because washing does reduce levels of some pesticides. However, other pesticides are taken up internally into the plant, are in the fruit, and cannot be washed off. Others are formulated to bind to the surface of the crop and do not easily wash off. Peeling reduces exposures, but valuable nutrients often go down the drain with the peel.

The best option is to eat a varied diet, wash all produce, and choose organic when possible to reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Yes, but far too slowly. Further, it's important to remember that the government said that highly toxic pesticides like DDT, chlordane, dursban and others were safe right up to the day the EPA banned them.

The EPA is in the process of upgrading pesticide safety standards to comply with a 1996 law (The Food Quality Protection Act) that requires protection of infants and children from pesticides. Several highly toxic pesticides have been banned or restricted under the law, but many have either escaped controls, or have not yet been subjected to them. Pesticide makers, food companies and agribusiness groups are fighting strict application of the statute, and so far have succeeded in weakening several key provisions.

Even the best application of the 1996 law will not protect the public from the combined effect of multiple pesticides. Although a handful of the most dangerous pesticides have been removed from the food supply in recent years, overall, the use of pesticides has remained steady.
