Save "Exotica" Plants. Rent due Again! by YourEnchantedGardener .....

This Blog begins by sharing the story of the raising of the December EXOTICA RARE FRUIT NURSERY RENT, It gives a backdrop of the issues facing Your Enchanted Gardener, who already had his plate full when he took on leadership to save the nursery. The Blog ends with a link to all names of the BEET KEEPER sponsors, new BEET KEEPERS, and San Diego Sustainability Allies, who heard the call of 1000's of rare fruit trees and exotic plants from around the world, some rooted in the ground for more than 20 years. They reached out for human help. Through powerful group effort, and many stepping up, December rent of $2600.00 + sale commission was made. The plants breathed easier. They were saved from near eviction. Rent, for the month of January, is due in 21 days as this PLANT YOUR DREAM BLOG hits the PUBLISH button.

NEWS STORY--

BEET KEEPERS, RETURN,
the outreach inspired by a talking plant
named KEEP THE BEET Media Star,
The World's First Talking Beet Plant,
went the distance in November 2009,
masterminding a 11th hour Revival of
three acres of the potentially endangered
EXOTICA RARE FRUIT NURSERY in VIsta, Ca
where 1000's of rare fruit trees and plants from
around the world faced eviction within 17 days!

The story of the the nursery falling on hard times
was told in a NORTH COUNTY TIMES article of
December 5, 2009.

Spangler gave a plea for help to Leslie Goldman,
Your Enchanted Gardener, on Saturday eve,
November 14. Goldman, who takes his marching
orders from KEEP The BEET, was asked to bump
saving of the Vista Nursery plants up on his
plate that was already filled to the brim.

http://curezone.com/upload/Blogs/Your_Enchanted_Gardener/tn-KEEP_the_BEET_Lives_here.jpg

Goldman, was involved in launching a campaign
to raise $70,000 toward a down payment on the
ENCHANTED GARDEN INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY land,
a 1/3 acre shared residence within walking distance
of SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY. The overgrown and
ill tended gardens and landscape and its kitchens
serve both the needs of vegans, vegetarians, and
Nourishing Tradition Chefs (i.e, meat eaters)
who live together on the property.

The property contains many extablished plants
and aromatic herbs. but in the eyes of somw trees
and some housemates is considered ill kept.

Goldman, has held this ground since the early 80's, when then,
the primary land owner SANDA EVERETTE moved on
to buy land in Washington state, leaving the managerial
deficit Goldman, more of a intuitive than a record keeper,
in charge of the destiny of the property.

Were it not for his considerable investment of
energy in the property, Goldman, author of more
than 10 books, most non promoted and in need
of republishing, would now be a well known
author, said one of the trees, the overhanging
cheramoya tree in the backyard.

"For years, Sanda has been generously waiting for
me to become Rich, states Your Enchanted Gardener,
a 62-year-old man now returning to the youth he was
when he was 42. Sanda has wanted me
to buy her out for years.

Under the current arrangement,
Goldman, who became manager in 1988 or so,
is to be traded free room after the age of 65 for the rest
of his life, This is in exchange for handling the primary care of the
property and its residents all these years.

How well Goldman has cared for the property and its residents
has been a bone of contention among numbers of its homedwellers
over the years, as well as the coyotes that howl
whenever a fire engine goes by. The land is rich in
nature spirits as well as animal life, even though
less than a 15 minute walk from SDSU.

VERY EXPENSIVE PLACE TO LIVE

Many who aspire to live in community have been drawn in
by rental ads that speak of reasonable rents and the opportunity
to trade 12 hours of work for a lower rent.
They do not realize that living together in intentional community
asks a great deal of expense of energy.

Numbers of the current residents enjoy the comaraderie of living
together with other like minded denizens of the mystical
well as earthly realms. Numbers of foodies are drawn
to the Enchanted Garden Intentional Community.
The kitchen often is fragrant with the aromas
of locally, known organic foods. Goldman,
who frequents the HILLCREST FARMERS' MARKET
most Sundays, can be found at the stall of
JR ORGANICS, across from the music, as well
as visiting his other BEET KEEPER BEET GROWERS,
BARRY LOGAN of LA MILPA ORGANIC FARM, and
PHIL NOBLE of SAGE MOUNTAIN FARM.

Most of the current residents are
people beyond their youth, one a pediatric nurse, another
an esteemed medical anthropolgist. A number are healers
holding down various jobs including waitressing
at the famous Mission Valley hangout called RUBY's.

A number o other residents, including Goldman, are multi-
talented but eccentric types, somehow drawn together
on the 1/3 acre land that feels like its own world and gives
a sense of living in the country in the city.

"Goldman, known on the internet for his verbose
style of writing--often uses more words than necessary-
but has an international following on his PLANT YOUR DREAM
blog. Some say, there are hidden multiple meanings
embedded in his writings. He comes off as a sort of court
jester at times, pulling from his past life in the court
of King Arthur. Other times, he expresses Essene Wisdom,"
said the avocado tree to the pineapple loquat.

The vision for the future holds dear to Cosmic
and Earth Forces through the Universe, who continue
to bless Goldman and its residents with infinite
blessings beyond what most who live here realize.

BILL TALL HELPED OUT in NOVEMBER

A $1500.00 purchase of plants from BILL TALL's CITY FARMERS NURSERY was a decisive lead off to helping raise $2600.00 rent to save the EXOTIC RARE FRUIT NURSERY in November. The sale came November 20, 2009, ten days before the financial nut needed to be crossed.

Other contributions in November that helped make
the December rent came from;

$300.00 toward purchasing trees from the
ROOTS SUSTAINABLE FOOD PROJECT in San Diego.

Per Steven Spangler, operating expenses in addition to the $2600.00
may go as high as $10.000 for the month of December.

You, yes You, dear reader,

one of 1000 or more trees.

FRUIT TREE EXPERT RUNNING OUT OF TIME TO KEEP NURSERY

ARTICLE IN NORTH COUNTY TIMES
DECEMBER 5, 09

At the intersection of the building industry collapse and the push for healthier foods and California-climate-friendly landscaping, a nursery owner near Vista wonders what hit him.
Steven Spangler raises some 1,200 varieties of plants at his 5-acre Exotica Rare Fruit Nursery. Where else can you find Ecuadorean black walnuts and Makepeace apples on the same lot?
On his botanic garden-like plot, Spangler also raises:
-- Seven varieties of cherries;
-- 16 varieties of guavas;
-- 17 varieties of palm;
-- 100 varieties of pomegranates;
-- 12 varieties of bananas.
In all, an estimated 60,000 potted plants grow here, awaiting new homes that came quickly during the building boom

Lovely place! I read this story and went by last weekend. The antithesis of Home Depot, Exotioca is very simple, natural and very, very low key. The huge in-the-ground exotics are so beautiful -- you don't get to see them in a common commerical nursery. We found wonderful plants and enjoyed spending time walking the endless paths under bamboo and endless exotics just learning and smelling new smells. And we bought a lot of amazing plants! Great special Holiday gifts! Check it out and help them make the rent. It would be a tradegy for the plant loving community to lose this amazing resource.

Endangered Rare Fruit Nursery
in Vista Needs Ideas, Support and Help
An invaluable local environmental resource
is in great peril and needs the support of people
who care about organic growing,
non-factory farms, biodiversity and nurturing the earth.
The Exotica Rare Fruit Nursery in Vista is a remarkable place that is home to many rare species of fruit tree as well as numerous types that are perfectly adapted for growing in Southern California. Steve Hays, the publisher of this magazine, has himself bought a now-flourishing apple tree there, as well as a Barbados Cherry, a bush that produces the fruit used in the production of Vitamin C-packed acerola. Add to that a stock assessed at a worth of a million dollars that includes Cherimoya, Kiwi, Persimmon, Papaya, Mango, and Pomegranate along with Nut varieties and Bamboo and, frankly, just about any fruit you can name, and you’ll have some idea of just what has been created there. Many of its trees are over twenty years old.
Steven Spangler, the caretaker of this precious botanical resource, reports that back rent is owed on three of his five acres. A hearing in Vista on November 19 gave him eight months to come up with a solution lest the land be taken over by a developer who wishes to use it for a commercial building. Steven has an option to purchase for $350,000 and is currently considering various options on how to purchase, including community ownership or making it a co-op. He seeks ideas, funding and community awareness of this local Eden that needs to be preserved.
