ONE REASON WE NEED TO TAKE ACTION:
THE PLASTIC SEA

"The simple fact is that when you drop a Styrofoam cup onto the street, you're causing more damage than you would by dropping a stick of dynamite into the ocean. You set in motion an invasion of thousands of killer plastibots that will cause death and destruction for centuries to come."

Blue Vision: Surfers Marching D.C.

On March 7-10, a group of "seaweed (marine grassroots) activists" and surfers will set aside their boards and crash Washington D.C., according to Surfer magazine. The environmental-minded non-profit Blue Frontier Campaign has organized the Blue Vision Summit in order to discuss the impacts of climate change and possible global solutions to various marine threats.

Nearly 500 ocean defenders will gather at the nation’s capitol, where goofy-footed rippers, suit-clad leaders of the House and Senate, a pair of prominent ocean explorers, and Green Party Presidential candidate Ralph Nader will join forces to create ocean awareness around the world, according to Surfer. Expect righteous celebrations at night and concentrated meetings by day, with eco-friendly surfers at the forefront.

“Surfers and bodysurfers are the ultimate sustainable sea users,” David Helvarg, Director of the Blue Frontier Campaign, told Surfer. “In getting our stoke, we shouldn’t have to risk getting sick from pollution, seeing waves destroyed by thoughtless development, or stand silent witness to the devastation of wildlife on our blue planet.”

--Ivan Miller

The Blue Vision Summit

We've held two Summit Planning Gatherings of some 60 heads of marine organizations in the fall of 2008 in Washington DC and San Francisco. Decisions reached at these Leadership Gatherings have shaped the agenda for the second Blue Vision Summit in Washington DC. The first Summit (in 2004 drew 250 participants. The 2009 Summit will include some 400-500 key leaders and activists from marine conservation organizations, aquariums, science centers, public agencies, maritime labor, ocean-dependent businesses, public health groups, coastal tribes and others.

The three key themes of the Summit will be:

Solutions that are working at the local, state and regional level and how to expand them
Climate and Oceans. How the Marine Community can develop a common voice and plan of action to address fossil fuel fired climate change impacts on the ocean and coastal environment.
Federal Legislation. The state of the Ocean Act and how to build an effective national constituency for ocean governance reform.
This Summit will demonstrate to the new Obama administration and Congress that there is a strong and diverse constituency ready to work for ocean and coastal protection and restoration. It will also be an opportunity to build a nationwide network of ocean activists ready to act at the local level to assure passage of effective ocean legislation and encourage good administrative and agency policies they support.
