Change American Agriculture! by Liora Leah .....

Agriculture in the U.S. contributes to greenhouse gasses--second only to transportation in this country. Read Michael Pollan's great article on this and other ills of American agriculture/food industry and his solutions of how to change it! Write to Obama/Biden and let them know YOUR ideas of how to change agricultural/food industry practices in the U.S.!

Read the article by Michael Pollan about food in the U.S., how it's grown, how growing it contributes to greenhouse gasses, and how the food industry continues to excerbate the obesity epidemic in the United States.  Dr. Pollan, the Knight Professor of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, give solutions to these and other pressing agriculture/food industry problems. He is the author, most recently, of “In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto.”

Read this article--Obama read Pollan's article and commented

Go to this website and comment about how important it is to select someone to the Cabinet post Secretary of Agriculture who is in favor of REAL change regarding how we grow and process our food and raise our food animals in this country.

Say NO to exploited farm workers, exploited/ill-treated food animals in Factory Farms, antibiotic/hormone laden animal products, GMO's, monocropping, pesticides & herbicides, pesticide testing on human subjects including children, biofuels made out of food crops, unnecessary and/or harmful food additives in processed foods (eg. soy lecithin/palm kernel oil/corn syrup/artificial coloring/artificial flavoring/preservatives/sulfites/MSG, etc), federal subsidies for monoculture/pesticide/herbicide/GMO using commodities farmers, oil-dependent farm machinery and food processing, wasteful water practices, water and air pollution from animal waste, un-recyclable plastic/styrofoam food packaging, unhealthy school lunch programs, centralized food production, exported agricultural practices that exploit/make farmers dependent on U.S. seed/farming practices in economically challenged countries, exported pesticides/herbicides banned in the U.S, and all the other ills of our current Agricultural and Food Industry policies.

Say YES to fair wages/benefits/safe working conditions for farm workers, bio-dynamic/organic/and other sustainable farming practices, crop rotation, water conservation, biodiversity, heritage seed preservation, humane and free-range organic grass-fed animal husbandry, increased school/consumer education on healthy diets, federal funding for organic urban farming, healthy organic foods in school lunch programs, organic gardens in public schools, alternative energy-fueled farms/food-processing factories/farm machinery --solar, wind, reclaimed methane gas from animal waste, etc--(NO nuclear power!), federal subsidies for smaller/family/organic farmers, locally grown foods, exported knowledge/equipment/assistance/funding to farmers in economically challenged countries to promote sustainable farming and food independence, and all the other positive attributes of eco-farming/eco-animal husbandry/eco-food processing.

MAY YOUR THANKSGIVING BE AN ORGANIC ONE!
Blessings, Liora

President-Elect Obama has yet to name a Secretary of Agriculture to his Cabinet. Read the letter from 84 Food Activists who state that the next Sec. of Ag. needs to be someone who will support sustainable agriculture & animal husbandry, renewable energy, farm worker rights, and more.
