Edible City Celebration
Come join Food Not Lawns of San Diego as they celebrate edible landscapes and self-sufficeincy at the first annual Edible City Celebration. Over the course of 9 days, there will be free workshops, movie nights and celebrations as we mark the acheivements of 2008 and spread the word about how to grow your own food and take part in a worldwide movement to become more self-sufficeint.

Dinner at Sea Rocket Bistro
When: Tue, Aug 12 @ 06:30pm - 08:30pm
Where: Sea Rocket Bistro
What: Please RSVP to Meetup.com/Community Farms and Gardens by Monday, August 11. The meal is $20 (which includes tax and tip, but does not include dessert and beverages). If you have some homegrown produce that you would like to contribute to the dinner, the restaurant will pay for the produce and include it in the menu (just let me know in your RSVP by Monday, August 11, 5pm).



Bio-intensive Gardening Workshop
When: Sat, Aug 09 @ 09:00am - 12:00pm
Where: San Diego City College
What: Check out the work being done at City College to turn a boring and overgrown patch of grass into a demonstration garden complete with compost bins, companion gardening methods and a hand built bamboo bridge. Join Paul Maschka, expert horticulturalist, as he explains the benefits of the garden and how you can transform your own lawn and garden into something truly special. See map (above) for exact location on campus.
Tomato/Basil Festival
When: Sat, Aug 09 @ 01:00pm - 04:00pm
Where: San Diego City College
What: Calling all foodies! Taste the difference of a home grown tomato! We'll have several tomato and basil varieties on hand for you to taste the difference between them. We'll also be making some simple but delicious dishes that really pay homage to the flavor of tomato and basil: Caprese, Gazpacho and Salsa. Same location as gardening workshop. See map (above) for exact location on campus.
Solar Cooking Demo and Potluck
When: Sun, Aug 10 @ 10:00am - 03:00pm
Where: Balboa Park @ end of Presidents Way
What: Come join us in Balboa Park to show off your solar oven and cooking skills and/or to learn how it works. Please bring a dish, snack, or beverage to share.
Monday Movie Night
When: Mon, Aug 11 @ 06:30pm - 08:30pm
Where: Mission Valley Library conference room
What: Come watch another great documentary, My Father's Garden. This film explores how synthetic chemicals and conventional agribusiness has transformed the farm. For more info on the film go to

Canning Workshop
When: Wed, Aug 13 @ 06:30pm - 08:30pm
Where: City farmers nursery - (kitchen in green home on property)
What: Learn how to preserve fruits by canning. We will use local farmers' market fruits to make a jam and possibly a tomato sauce. This will be hands-on fun. And if you bring a jar (or a donation), you can take home some of the sweet yumminess!

Cooking class: Indian food
When: Thu, Aug 14 @ 06:00pm - 09:00pm
Where: City farmers nursery - (kitchen in green home on property)
What: Learn how to use various spices/herbs in preparing a simple vegetarian Indian meal(North and south Indian dishes). The menu will consist of a rice dish(pilaf),chapati(flat bread), korma, green beans thoran and raita. Please bring your own rolling pin.

Food Preservation through Fermentation
When: Sat, Aug 16 @ 12:00pm - 02:00pm
Where: City farmers nursery - (kitchen in green home on property)
What: Bottle up your own ginger ale and make some Kim Chi or Sauerkraut in this hands on fermentation workshop. Learn about equipment, yeasts, and probiotics while we have fun exploring all stages of fermenting healthy foods and beverages. You'll take home a bottle of Ginger Ale and a jar of Kim Chi that is made through the workshop. Please bring a peanut butter sized jar & lid.

Where: Hillcrest Farmers Market
What: Drop by the Hillcrest Farmer's Market and learn about composting the right way. There will be a vermicomposting bin on hand to see worms in action.

Hands-on Compost Workshop
When: Sun, Aug 17 @ 02:30pm - 04:30pm
Where: Bierney Elementary
What: Come get your hands dirty and learn how to do compost the right way.
