Owl Be Home For The Holidays or The Thanksgiving Song
by Jeff Guidry (Wanbli Mone')

Little Brother who sang so sweet

A few years back on a cold, wet, and dreary Thanksgiving day I was at the center along with a handful of volunteers. We'd arrived early to feed and clean so people could get home to be with their families for Thanksgiving dinner. I stayed late to help with a Bald Eagle that had been shot. This girl had 17 shotgun pellets scattered across her wings and chest. If that wasn't bad enough she also had a very infected foot, (a direct result of the shooting). This needed to be drained, repacked, and rebandaged. I was to be the muscle and hold her down while Kaye worked on her foot. I caught this terribly injured bird and took her into the medical room. There were five of us in there including the Eagle as Kaye began to work on her foot. Since baby season was long over the center was quiet. Our Spotted Owl who had been a patient for a few months and loved to sit outside of his enclosure, was enjoying the quiet morning. This Owl could not be released because of damage to a couple of his talons. The result being he could not close part of his right foot and therefore could not hunt. This kid would starve to death if released. We were moving right along with the Eagle when a strange and incredibly beautiful sound came whispering down the hallway. We froze and looked at each other, stunned for a moment, until we realized where that magical sound was coming from. It was our brother, Spotted Owl, and he was singing his song of life. His sweet voice filled the room while we continued working. So here we were, Thanksgiving day, trying to help this damaged Eagle, while our Owl brother sang us his spirit song. He went on for twenty minutes or more. I can't describe to you how I felt at that moment, suffice it to say, that was one the best Thanksgivings I ever had. I will be forever grateful for that song of life. All thanks to brother Owl.
