March 10, 08,

I would like to do more about this.
Some legislative action is needed.
I do not know what else will work.

I have talked to three of my favorite farmers
in the last two weeks about this.

It is a crisis.

Farmers in San Diego are being told to
cut back their water use by 30%.
This is mandatory.
There are fines and severe outcomes
for anyone who breaks this decree.

Local, organic farmers in San Diego
are being deeply affected.

Some were already cutting back last year
of their own volition.

Now the meter readers have stepped in.
They are being asked to cut water according
to the figures that were on the meter last year!

Ron and Eva of Trethowan Farms escaped the
fires by a miracle. They wonder if they will escape
the water issue. They had already cut back last year
to a minimum usage out of necessity. Now they are
being asked to cut back 30% more. They are not
sure their trees can survive.

Joe Rodriguez Jr. wakes up with a question mark
on his mind every morning now.
What crops does he cut back?

Barry Logan had one meter in his field
last year that he was not reading. He was not
using that field. This year, the amount of water
he can use on that field is Zero minus 30%.
He cannot use any water from that meter!
He already cut back to drip to conserve last year.
Can he cut back another 30%?
He does not see how. He is thinking of
letting go of employees.

Phil and Juany Noble, are O.K. with the water.
They have wells, but there bell is ringing from
recent visits by government officials who have
a lot to say about workers comp and other regulations.

Food?
This is not a priority in So Cal.
It does not seem to be the case.

At a time when we are talking about
Energy Independence, we feel the
highest use of our land is development.
We can have the folks in Mexico and elsewhere
feed us, right?

More on this later....
