Dear Leslie-
I would like to invite you to a reception related to "The Shameless Agitator Award" for service to my church and to the larger community which I will be honored to receive this coming Sunday from The Social Justice Ministry of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego. They are sponsoring a reception which will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, 2/14/08 in the Common Room at the church on 4190 Front St., S.D., CA 92107, across from the UCSD Hospital. The actual award will be presented at our church services at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. this coming Sunday, 2/17/08, which you are welcomed to come to, as well.
I have worked for many causes over my lifetime, particularly in areas like peace and justice, environmental protection, consciousness raising, as well as fundamental reform of our political system. I have also been, personally, influenced in my work for "positive well being for all living things" by people like Carl Rogers, Robert Mueller and Robert Theobald--who were great supporters of the Gandhian concept of a Peace Army.
To my mind, there is no other organization that I know of, and have worked for, that better embodies this than Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP)*--an international organization providing trained, unarmed peacekeepers to areas of violent conflict around the world. This is one of the causes that is dearest to my heart--I have come to know them, be trained by them and to have encouraged support for their work.
At this gathering we are honored to have with us the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Nonviolent Peaceforce who I happen to be working with in San Diego this week, Mel Duncan.** He is an outstanding leader of one of the finest organizations I have ever had the opportunity to work for. There will be representatives of many other fine organizations at this gathering. However, Mel Duncan will be the featured speaker, and you will all be able to ask him questions about the work that NP is doing around the world.
Please rsvp to John at 619-222-6036, or pacerjp14@sbcglobal.net if you are able to join us at the Thursday reception. Thanks.
Yours for a more positive future, John

In honor of NP's courageous efforts in conflict regions around the world, Mel was awarded the 2007 Pfeffer Peace Prize given by the Fellowship of Reconciliation.
He has done grass roots organizing for peace, justice and the environment for over 30 years. He helped found the Minnesota Jobs with Peace Campaign, Advocating Change Together, and the Minnesota Alliance for Progressive Action (MAPA) with Paul Wellstone.
Mel has, also, brought medical supplies to the people of Iraq.
In 1997 he received the prestigious Community Leaders Fellowship from the Archibald bush Foundation which allowed him to spend 1-1/2 years studying the connections between peace, justice, and spirituality. A persistent vision emerging from two years of study in spirituality and social action led Mel to the Hague Appeal for Peace in 1999, where he met David Hartsough and they began to work with others to launch Nonviolent Peaceforce.
He and his partner, Georgia, live in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. They have eight children.
