I got this message from Katherine Torres this morning and wanted to pass it on.......
Good Morning:
Of course, the entire world knows of the fires in So. California (even my daughter in Istanbul, Turkey has been hearing of it on the News.). A friend of one of my grandson's is in dire need of help. Richard Varshock, 16 years old, and his father, Tom, were trying to help firemen save their home in Petrero, CA (near Tecate, MX). His mother, Diane, had gone into town for evacuation. At some point the firetruck blew up. The father, was killed. Richard received 60% burns. He is at the UCSD hospital and will undergo a five hour surgery today at 12:00 Noon PDT. He is doing better than doctors expected.
We also learned that his family did not have home insurance because they were in an area that the insurance companies would not cover. They, of course, lost their home. We have also learned that they did not have health insurance. Richard will be undergoing many surgeries and recovery processes. They need help.
We held an Emergency Board Meeting through SPICA - Way of Light this morning. We ruled that we want to be a vehicle to help fire victims. We are placing the Varshock family at the top of the list, but we would like to help as many families as possible. We do not have facilities to manage clothing and other needs in that manner. However, we can help them financially. If you would like to help, please send your donation to SPICA - Way of Light. Place in the memo section that this is for the Varshock family or Fire Victims of San Diego County. We will make sure your donation is 100% placed in the hands of the families. We are a 501(c)3 Charitable Organization and your donations are tax deductible. You will receive a note from us letting you know how your donation has helped others.
If you will, please send your donations to
SPICA - Way of LIght, to one of two places:

Please pass the word. We have had over 500,000 thousand families evacuated and they are continuing to evacuate families. We know of 1500 houses destroyed. The organizations for fire fighting are doing extremely well in keeping order here. Airplanes are in the air to help from the Fire Department as well as the Naval and Marine bases.
I know you are all praying for us here in So. California and please know your prayers are deeply appreciated.
I would love to share that a "faceless" friend from Canada (I have not met her in person, only through email), Cathy Scott and her family, are praying for all people displaced by the fire and will help as they can.
Warm blessings,
Rev. Katherine Torres
