Sometimes in life, someone is there for you...watching out for you…and it makes ALL the difference in the world.

We are in a firestorm and a huge part of our county is burning up and it can’t be stopped. It is still raging now.

Our dream property that we bought in March is in the spiritual hills in Escondido’s backcountry. It is a historic health ranch and is a very special place. It has survived 5 major fires in the area over the last 50 years, unscathed… We are hoping for the same by the end of this crisis.

Thank you for your calls of concern for all of us, and we are all fine for now. On the other hand... our dream property and retreat is very close to the action today! The Witch creek fire met with the Guajito fire... We live in the Guajito area and I got a neighbors report that there is a small brush fire 1/2 mile to my east. This is BAD with westerly winds. So our dreams may burn... Our newly remodeled home and retreat center, barns cabins and 4 mobile homes, 150 fruit trees may be scorched, and our 4 Icelandic sheep may get barbequed...

Fiona the kids and I left the Ranch on Sunday evening after 9 and we know there were fires south of us. I tried to pay close attention and made sure to have a plan with our tenants. I can’t get back up there at this point. Most of the roads are blocked and the fires have shifted.

Last night my friend and neighbor Jar-el (Dr. Ed Elkin) called to tell me he stayed in the area and checked up on my place. “Alls clear for now” he said. This morning wasn’t so cheerful. He told me there was a small brushfire heading my way and that a couple of guys with water buckets could put it out. So I called every agency possible until I felt like someone would get a fireman up there to take a look.

Anyways the morning passed and then I got the cal from Jar-el. He had mandatory evacuation and had to go and there was a boatload of smoke coming from my direction. But what could he do?

As he left the area, about a mile away, he saw a group of fire engines, He pulled over and told them about my place and ended up taking them directly into the fire on my property! One Mobile home was already burned to the ground, as is my farm truck, fire hose (1 of 5 on site) and supply building, but the fire didn’t get my house, retreat building, or other structures and the animals were doing fine! We called me from my own deck and filled me in so I should know that help wasn’t on the way, it was here!

He acts like it was nothing for him to risk his life and go to the fire to help save my home. Ed and his housemates are evacuated now and are going to stay with us at our home in University City until this blows over. I don’t know what will happen from here but a lovable, metaphysical; muse of an angel helped me right when I needed him!

I’ll try to keep you filled in over the next few weeks.
