Protect Calif. Condors by Liora Leah .....

CALIFORNIANS: Help protect California condors by urging Governor Schwarzenegger to sign legislation that limits the use of toxic lead ammunition thoughout the condor's range.

Date:   10/2/2007 7:46:20 PM ( 17 y ago)

Governor Schwarzenegger is deciding right now whether to sign a
crucial bill that would help ensure a healthy future for the
magnificent California condor.

Fewer than 200 of these giant birds soar free in the wild today.
But powerful gun industry lobbyists are pressuring Governor
Schwarzenegger to abandon them.

Please go to

right
now and urge Governor Schwarzenegger to sign pending legislation
that will limit the use of toxic lead ammunition throughout the
condor's range.

Condors routinely ingest shot and bullet fragments from the
carcasses of animals that are left or lost by hunters. If the
ammunition is made of lead, it paralyzes the condors' gullets
and they starve to death.

Fortunately, the state legislature has just passed a bill that
will help address this terrible threat. The law would require
the use of readily available, non-lead ammunition for several
common kinds of shooting in condor habitat areas.

Our partner organization, NRDC -- along with Native Americans,
physicians, conservation-minded hunters and others -- have waged
a multi-year campaign to protect condors from lead ammunition,
culminating in a lawsuit filed earlier this year.

In addition to the legislature, the California Fish and Game
Commission has also responded to our campaign by signaling that
it wants to take action on this critical issue.

But gun-industry advocates have persuaded Governor
Schwarzenegger to ask for the resignation of the staunchest
condor supporter among the commission's five members.

Please go to
http://www.nrdcactionfund.org/condor_action
and
demand that Governor Schwarzenegger support the Ridley-Tree
Condor Conservation Act and refuse the resignation of courageous
Fish and Game Commissioner Judd Hanna.

Thank you for helping to ensure a future for the California
condor, the imperiled giant of our skies.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Frances Beinecke
President
