Many people are concerned that sections of the USA PATRIOT Act and other new laws and policies meant to prevent terrorism undermine basic civil rights and liberties.
The Bill of Rights Defense Committee helps people convert their concerns into meaningful action to restore protections guaranteed under the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution.

No Deal on PATRIOT Act Reauthorization! Key negotiators created a "deal" that failed to meet the most basic civil liberties requirements the grassroots has called for, hence no vote before Congress's Thanksgiving recess. The sunsetting provisions expire on December 31, 2005, if Congress does not renew them. Expect a vote after Congress returns on December 12th. Subscribe to BORDC's newsletter/action alert to learn more about what you can do to help restore civil liberties. MORE>
Habeas corpus threatened! The Senate has agreed to a revised Graham-Levin amendment to the Defense spending bill. The Graham amendment would deny Guantánamo detainees their habeas corpus rights upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2004. The 'compromise' language imparted by Senator Levin would allow detainees to challenge their detention, but only in a limited way in the court of appeals or if sentenced by a military trial to 10 years in prison or death (see the 11/15 Washington Post article for more information).
Guantánamo play performances will take place in Washington, D.C. (11/2-12/11) and Newton, MA (12/11). See our list of past and present performances. Download scr1pt and tips for hosting your own reading at our Guantánamo reading project page.
Torture and abuse: On November 3, the BORDC faxed a letter opposing torture and abuse to President Bush and conferees for the 2006 defense spending bill, cross-copied to all members of Congress. The letter (PDF) was signed by national organizations, local governments, veterans groups and retired military officers (view the press release). MORE>
