Dear A-Letter Reader:
You might think it was Mark Twain or Will Rogers who observed, "No man's
life, liberty or property is safe while the legislature is in session,"
but recent scholarship attributes the quotation to 1866 and a
New York judge, Gideon Tucker. Even that's not certain, but the
statement remains totally appropriate as the US Congress is in recess
during the month of August.
I once quoted this statement during a debate in the House that was seen
on C-Span TV. A dear lady somewhere out West sent me the quote (with
my name under it) embroidered in a framed sampler. This bit of fancy
political needlework still has a prominent place in my house.
I agree with the Heritage Foundation's Dan Mitchell who says "a
congressional vacation is welcome news for taxpayers." Some critics
complain the Congress gets too much vacation time, but anytime they're
out of session, at least they can't do any more damage to our liberties
or pocketbooks.
One of the more disappointing aspects of this is that the 'conservative'
Republican Party controls both houses of Congress, yet their spending
and big government policies don't show even that 'dimes worth of
difference' from the leftist Democrats the late George Wallace used
to complain about (with much justification).
President Bush has presided over the largest overall increase in
inflation adjusted federal spending since the Great Society of "guns
and butter" of Lyndon B. Johnson. Even after excluding spending on
defense and homeland security, Bush is still the biggest spending
president in 30 years.
Before Congress left town they passed a $286.4 billion highway projects
bill with goodies for all, ignoring budget restraints. Most Republican
lawmakers are now out claiming full credit for this pork barrel deal.
Far from shying away from their accomplishments, lawmakers are
embracing the pork.
And read (below) US Rep. Ron Paul's graphic description of last minute
bribery on the House floor that got the Central American Free Trade
Act passed by a one-vote margin. Says he: "Leaving aside the arguments
for or against CAFTA itself, the process by which the bill ultimately
passed should sicken every American who believes in representative
government."
My problem is that, after 8 years in the House many years ago (1973-81)
I know how much worse things have gotten today. Pray for the Republic -
not the Republicans (or the Democrats).
