Happenings

life is unpredictable, but we can learn so much from all that we experience if we can transcend FEAR

Sunday night I was reminded that human existence can be quite unpredictable.

Seemingly out of nowhere, during a calm evening at home, my heart started beating quite rapidly and noticeably so. Similar to what the heart does during and after exercise, except much more pronounced, and I was still and calm and not exercising.

This went on for almost an hour and I was scared. During the hour I tried various natural solutions that I am aware of. I used Rescue Remedy Cream on the area of my heart and all around it, as well as on the insides of my wrists. Usually that is calming. But the fast heartbeats continued unabated.

I also took some passionflower extract, 20 drops. Always very calming. A friend had recommended it to me. The fast heartbeats continued.

I tried lying down. Meditating. All that I do that calms me and gets me centered.

The fast heartbeats continued and intensified. So after almost an hour I called my HMO. I think of the allopathic medical world as the last place to consult, after all possible natural, alternative interventions available have been tried. Because it was after 8 at night on a Sunday, what I had to work with that was natural was basically what I had at home, as the fast heartbeats were so intense it would not have been safe for me to drive my car. Plus it was snowing and the roads were icy.

Got the usual runaround from the HMO. The nurse I spoke to suggested that I take a taxi to a hospital over 20 miles from my home. On snowy nights it takes a taxi an average of 1 hour to get to my house. She emphasized that I needed to be seen immediately. I asked her about the option of being transported in an ambulance.

She asked if I had any friends who could drive me to the hospital 20 miles away. I had already tried to reach my family and friends who are nearby, but was not feeling well enough to continue to try to get a ride and explained this to her as politely and clearly as possible.

She said she had to call and consult with a doctor. The long and short of it is that 40 minutes after I first called my HMO, the nurse called me back and said she was transferring my call to 911. Then I was on hold for several minutes and decided to hang up and call 911 myself.

If you don't do everything exactly as the HMO wishes, they end up refusing to pay for the health care you receive. Hopefully that explains why I followed their directives over the phone, despite my instincts not to.

So an ambulance came, and they hooked me up to electrodes and oxygen and such, and said my heart was beating irregularly at ~200 beats per minute. They called it A-Fib which is an abbreviation for Atrial Fibrillations. Since then I've done a bunch of internet and library research on this and know of more natural solutions which is helpful. Natural solutions give me hope.

I was lucky, in that the EMTs decided to take me to a hospital 5 minutes from my house rather than the one 20 miles away. There's a great Cardiologist at the hospital close to home, who I was actually quite impressed with.

A few brief anesthetized procedures later, on Monday late afternoon, I was told that my heart is healthy, and referred back to my HMO Doctor for followup. I also now have the surgical site, the end point of the femoral (sp?) artery, to take care of.

Still trying to discover the underlying cause, as that rather mystifies me.

Can't help but think that if I could just stick to 100% raw foods, this sort of thing would not occur again.

I want to.

The people at the hospital were impressive. They gave me good care, treated me with respect, and answered my many questions thoroughly.

It's just that those great people aren't within the realm of who I can go to with my HMO. I was lucky to encounter them, if only temporarily.

I feel fortunate to have the Acupuncturists and other natural practitioners that I have in my life. And I will continue with the holistic and herbal modalities I am utilizing to treat my health issues.

The main focus for me is on losing weight (and I have lots to lose!) in a healthy balanced way through exercise and sensible dieting.

That will no doubt clear up most of my current health issues.

And, honestly, I haven't been using the VIBE Machine, as heart issues are a gray area with it as far as I'm concerned. Because it generally has an energizing and stimulating effect, I hesitate to do sessions with it after having the 200 heartbeats per minute.

I know there is improved health in the future for me. I have to work hard and be disciplined to improve my health, and I am committed to doing that.

Thank you for listening!
