Now that the Denver Nuggets signed the former 2008 first round Wizards draft pick to a 4-year $44 million dollar contract, let's take a look at his progress so far and see if we can get a better understanding of the Nuggets decision.

With this resigning, General Manager Masai Ujiri is showing the fan base his continued faith in Mcgee's ability to keep developing and becoming one of the top centers in the league. As seen in an episode of the NBA tv series titled The Association: Denver Nuggets, Ujiri wanted Mcgee in Denver and spoke about his huge potential. After resigning him he also had this to say, “JaVale did a tremendous job for us after the trade,” “He worked hard on the court and did everything our coaches asked of him. Plus, he’s only 24 years old. With our coaching staff, he’s only going to get better.”

At first glance JaVale is a 7 foot lanky big man that makes up for his seemingly weak build with his unique athleticism. It's an attribute that certainly makes him stand out from the crowd and provides a very apparent advantage over other centers. His first appearance in the dunk contest brought him a Guinness world record by dunking three balls at the same time. These eye catching athletic skills were noted by Nuggets coach George Karl when he said, " I don't think I've ever coached a guy like this. He has the moves of a 6-6 player."

Karl acknowledged this after Mcgee had two big performance's in last year's playoff series versus the Lakers. Javale has only improved his numbers among key catagories for centers since being a rookie in 2008. His points, rebounds, blocks, and even assists have all had a steady increase each season. The most evident improvement began during the 2010-2011 season when he became a full-time starter and averaged career highs in points, rebounds, and was the leading shot blocker in the NBA. Panic Away

The next season it seemed as if Mcgee was really turning the corner before being taded to the Nuggets in a three team exchange that also included the Clippers. Once with the Nuggets he lost his starting role but continued his effectiveness on their second unit. Being given reduced minutes seemed like the right step towards his progression. These improvements are only the beginning of what needs to be seen in order for Mcgee's development to remain positive. On any given night while with the Wizards mostly, you were able to witness JaVale's highlight dunks, a pretty hook shot and finger roll here and there, and outstanding blocks. Where he fell into trouble was when his basketball iq painfully showed it's lack of progression to the world. Satellite Direct

He became the butt of jokes with his constant goaltending and immature anitcs such as playing to complete his triple-double in a game with the Wizards last season versus the Bulls. The game was lost for the Wizards but it seemed as if Mcgee was more concerned with his individual stats than helping the team compete. Afterwards he said about his actions,"I got a triple-double. Who can say they got a triple-double? I’m not really worried about it." Acne No More

Along with those antics which also became youtube sensation's and popular blog material, he showed poor awareness on the court by chasing after blocked balls and offensive rebounds instead of defending as well as not hustling back to protect the rim. Even more troubling were his impromptu isolation plays and a lack of understanding the need for a post presence. Vision Without Glasses

This is exactly the kind of immaturity the Wizards are now glad to be done with as they recently amnestied Andre Blatche which waive's him and has his salary removed from their cap. With his departure, they now have finally rid the team of players who were around during the Gilbert Arenas "Gun-Gate" scandal. Despite Javale's antics I always believed he was the better prospect out of those former departed Wizards which included Nick Young, that were constantly referred to as "knucleheads" by not only fans and media in the Washington metropolitan area but nationally as well. Javale joins a Nuggets team that ranked 1st in points per game, assists per game, and 8th in rebounds per game but 29th in defense which explains their fast pace style of play and the high scoring games that became a familiar theme last year. He's surrounded by a mostly young and athletic team which sounds and looked like the perfect landing place for him. Since the departure of Carmelo Anthony, the team seems like their looking for their next superstar and face of the franchise. Judging by Mcgee's new contract it certainly looks as if he'll be counted on to be that replacement even if he's not destined to at least live up to minor expectations.

Only time will tell if this move becomes another bad contract similar to his former teamate Andre Blatche's or a worthy investment that did just enough to quiet the masses.
