KEEP THE BEET MEDIA STAR
THE WORLD"S FIRST TALKING BEET PLANT
brought this to my attention.

Ocean Aid 2010 will be a concert event held at the restored San Diego Sports Arena in the fall of 2010, that draws the community together in a call to action for the oceans. We are bringing together nonprofits, scientists, corporate leaders, and cause-minded members of the artistic community to spread the word and ignite solutions. The event will educate the public on three critical problem areas: plastic pollution, overfishing, and ocean acidification, and offer ways that individuals can help with solutions.

Ocean Aid leadership is shared by a unique team of eco-advocates, cofounders Anthony Zolezzi, Tom Newmark and Paul Ligon. Zolezzi, who turned his attention from organic food to plastic pollution in the ocean three years ago, will chair the organizing committee. Newmark, a rainforest advocate dedicated to saving species in Costa Rica and now addressing overfishing on a worldwide basis, is responsible for the organization’s efforts to address the problem. Ligon is a Tellus waste specialist with over 20 years’ experience in the environmental field. The organizing committee also includes Netherlands-based Jesse Goossens (author of Plastic Soup); Ernie Hahn, an avid surfer and general manager of the San Diego Sports Arena; Melissa McGinnis, a millennial marketing consultant and eco-expert; Jason Rose, general manager for WM San Diego and Orange County, which has realized award-winning recycling diversion rates, and Mark Armen, an ocean advocate who began researching plastic pollution and marine protected areas four years ago.

Ocean Aid is a nonprofit group whose mission is to stop the exploitation of the oceans resulting from plastic pollution, overfishing, and acidification. Each year less than 5 percent of all the plastic produced in the United States is recycled, with a large portion of the nonrecycled material entering the oceans via rivers and waterways. In the ocean, the plastic swirls within a handful of open sea gyres, strangles and suffocates wildlife, and contaminates our food supply.

Global fishery depletion is accelerating. Scientists project that if current trends continue, all fisheries will collapse by the year 2048, leaving the oceans devoid of seafood. In addition, scientists are deeply concerned with the unprecedented amounts of carbon dioxide entering the marine environment. Increased carbon dioxide emissions in the air are also altering the chemistry of the oceans. This shifting underwater environment will severely affect marine life, food webs, and overall biodiversity.

We are working collaboratively with nonprofits, universities, and companies who are focused on bringing about solutions to these issues. With the help of our partners, we intend to use the Ocean aid 2010 event to communicate succinct and tangible courses of action:

To reverse plastic pollution, society must “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.” While much emphasis has been put on recycling over the past few years, we must acknowledge that it is but one solution and that refusing, reducing and reusing need to command the same attention. We can all refuse a drinking straw, knowing that this item has greater chance of ending up in the open ocean than in a recycling facility. An additional solution is closed-loop and end-of-life-responsibility systems where products and services are designed to be tracked, recaptured, and reprocessed. This design is one that can enable products to be infinitely recycled to higher values and uses, and keep them from ever finding their way to the ocean.
To prevent overfishing, citizens must verify that their seafood choices come from sustainable sources. The Monterey Bay Aquarium publishes regional seafood guides that recommend to consumers which types to buy and avoid. Now in its tenth year, the Seafood Watch program is available in pocket-sized cards and iPhone applications for convenient access and use. To start restoring fisheries, the global community must establish marine protected areas (also known as marine reserves) covering 20 to 40 percent of the oceans. Essentially “national parks of the sea,” marine protected areas (MPAs) provide “no-fishing zones” and help to rejuvenate fish stocks and biodiversity.

To stop the acidification of the oceans, humans must reduce their carbon footprint by capping global emissions through energy efficiencies and the use of alternative forms of energy. We must stabilize atmospheric carbon dioxide levels at 350 parts per million. In addition, marine protected areas must be created and enforced; MPAs have been shown to increase the overall resiliency of the oceans and in fact help the oceans combat the many stresses placed upon them (of which plastic pollution, overfishing, and acidification are but three). A call to create a “network” of MPAs is very important as well and is currently in a planning and development stage as part of the California Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) process.

PLASTIC SOUP?

Floating in the Pacific Ocean ...
... is a vast amount of plastic waste twice the size of the United States. Marine life and sea birds are dying, and we are also finding plastic in our own foods from the sea ... all with dire consequences. Look, read and shudder; it's time for action!

Easing the effects of ‘eco-depression’ with a ‘get-together therapy’ session

July 26, 2010

It’s finally capped--- thank God, the well is capped. Today I had breakfast in Laguna Beach with one of my friends and colleagues, Greg Horn, the best-selling author of Living Green, catching up on a thousand different topics (it times, we almost seemed to be speaking in tongues). But what I found especially interesting was that fact that, like me, he was also suffering from “eco-depression” over the spill. Greg swims every day in the ocean off South Florida, and the thought of not being able to because of the oil was one he found profoundly disturbing. I reflected how this spill impacted me in ways I couldn’t even express until today.

If nothing else, it was therapeutic to be able to connect with a like-minded friend who understands that sustainability is not optional, but absolutely necessary to the survival of any species, including man.

So now I am on my way to Knoxville and reflecting how the lesson this gusher represented can help us to bring about the sustainable future it’s essential that we achieve if the planet and its inhabitants are to survive -- but only if we translate what we’ve learned from this catastrophe into prompt and sweeping action.

This video celebrates unexpected healing rain that fell
at the Venice Eco Fest July 10, 2010. Keep The Beet Media Star,
The World's First Talking Beet Plant, was the created a sacred
space on stage with her presence during parts of the day.
She came up, asking me, Your Enchanted Gardener, to bring
healing rainwater to the ocean, dedicated to Deepwater.
The flash I brought up could not be opened, so late in the
program Mother Earth obliged with a delightful rain burst
that pulled the electric plug on the show.

Deepwater began April 21, the day before Earth Day.
It was first capped five day after Keep The Beet attended
The Venice Eco Fest July 10, 2010.

We have it in us all to bring rain and bring sunshine.
We can balance our earth, and aid and assist the
REBIRTH OF MOTHER EARTH. She invites us each
to Plant Our Dreams with living seeds of Beets.
through this simple action, we can regain our connection
to the Beat of Nature.
