A couple of weeks ago, an American astronaut who was flying hundreds of
miles above the earth in the latest space flight was in radio contact with
the ground. At that point he and his crew were sailing high above the Middle
East. The astronaut remarked that from that altitude they could see nothing
of the bombing and destruction taking place in Lebanon, Iraq or Israel. He
described the sight of the earth as seen from space as breathtaking. He also
said that "the planet is so beautiful. From up here it looks like a blue
jewel, so delicate and fragile in the coldness of space. We should take care
of it and ourselves better because it's really all we've got." Meanwhile,
down below on earth, people danced, fought, laughed, loved, ate in
restaurants or out of garbage cans. Some starved, others fought, dropped
bombs and shot each other while others went about the daily business of
living without giving much of a thought about the reality of living in and
on such a fragile ecosystem that all human beings share by neccessity. If it
were possible to limn the entire human race from the higher perspective
given by the astronaut I would elect the words of Mark Twain and his brief
explanation of humanity: "When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries
disappear and life stands explained." - May your madness be peacefull and
happy. May the killing be mercifully brief. For those of you who might wish
to move to a planet where the people have learned to get along and live
together in harmony, the flight to that planet has been canceled. If we were
half as intelligent as we believe ourselves to be, we could accomplish that
right here on our very own planet.
