Astounding, isn't it? I believe the problem boils down to this: at this point in time, we NEED our vehicles. What we don't need are petroleum fossil fuel-driven vehicles. I believe that we have the intellect to develop technology to produce cars that run on more efficient, less polluting fuels. We have the intellect to develop technology to produce cars that get 100 miles per gallon, or more. We have the intellect to produce the technology to develop mass transit systems that work.
So why aren't we doing it? Because we don't have the INTENT or the MINDSET or the SPIRITUAL focus to do those things. We aren't looking down the road, into future generations. It is a very NOW, ME culture and society we are living in: get our goods while the getting is good, and don't bother to think about the wreaked future ahead--this, of course, is very ironic--don't all the latest "New Age" spiritualists tell us to live in the NOW and not worry so much about the future--even my own Spiritual Guides say that, and there is truth to this in one's personal life, yet I believe one still has to have a larger, global mindset if one cares anything at all about the planet or even one's own family's future.
I often think, well, the folks that run the companies and the government are people, too, and they have children and grandchildren, too, and all of us, no matter how rich or poor, need to breathe clean air and drink clean water and eat healthy food, so why aren't these people as concerned about the state of health of the planet as the "greenies" among us?
I agree with finallyfaith, that it is a matter of the need and want for power and money that drives the economy--it is very lucrative for companies to continue with the status quo--why should they make changes when the current system is working for them? And this lust for money and power overrides concerns for the health of the planet, the health of people, and even the health and future life of the families of those holding the reins of power. And our entire Western culture does teach us this, from a very early age, that acquisition of the material is held in regard more highly than art, music, spirituality, nature...
Again, I really think it is all about mindset, and intention, and spiritual connection to the planet, Gaia, as a Living Being, and recognizing the Divinity within each and every one of us.
