My personal feeling is that it's a control and ego issue. If we believe that there is nothing greater than ourselves, we are absolved of all responsibility to remain humble, appreciative, and personally accountable.
One of the examples that I recollect goes as follows:
I'm in an enclosed room with no windows and one door. There is no handle or knob on the door. Suddenly, a handle appears. As this is my only means to escape, wouldn't that handle be interpreted as something greater than myself? Just in the context of this example, wouldn't that handle effectively be considered a god?
Many people balk at the idea of "God," because it's disturbing. The inference that we are not in control is intolerable to many. Just look at how human beings have tried to control natural events. And, when we're reminded of this (hurricane Katrina/Rita, 2005 tsunami, earthquakes in Haiti), the human race cries, "FOUL!" and starts demanding to know why warnings weren't issued so that people could prepare. Prepare for what? To evacuate an entire nation?
I see the light of the sun touching the edges of frozen treetops, and I'm reminded that I am very, very insignificant in this great, vast, and amazing Universe. God, Yahwey, Muhammed, or the Great Creator - they are one and the same and we have lost our ability to feel humble and accept our own human condition.
