It seems quite possible that the process of being absorbed into the Milky Way Galaxy would have an effect on the rotation of Earth, which would have an effect on its magnetic field. It seems quite natural, then, that the magnetic field reversals in Earth's history would have been created by gravitational interference of the Milky Way as Earth was jostled about upon its entry to an orbit about the center of the Milky Way.
Therefore, it seems quite possible that the magnetic field reversals in Earth's magnetic field would give insight into when this "adoption" process took place.
